The finance world has recently experienced a major technology disruption in the form of cryptocurrency. Examples of popular cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and Polkadot. According to Raynor, a decentralized finance expert in Statista, cryptocurrency’s current annual growth rate in the year 2021 is estimated to be 7%. Credibility As a finance and tech enthusiast, I believe that cryptocurrency offers numerous benefits compared to fiat currency. Besides, there is extensive research to support it. Preview: I wish to affirm the resolution that ‘Cryptocurrency is better than Cash.’ I will detail advantages of using cryptocurrency over cash by using facts from credible authors. I will also support my argument using the recently conducted class survey concerning the topic. My first point will focus on how cryptocurrency integrates modern technology, which is crucial. Secondly, I will explain how cryptocurrency facilitates borderless trading, which is a limitation of cash. The last benefit will be low government interference due to the nature of cryptocurrency. Body: Cryptocurrency offers benefits for its users and the financial world at large. In my opinion, crypto will significantly influence finance in the future. As such, it is imperative that we all adopt cryptocurrency as a medium of exchange. I. The first advantage of adopting cryptocurrency is that it is based on modern technology. According to the class survey, 55.6% of the respondents think cryptocurrency is better than cash because it integrates modern technology. Notably, the world is shifting towards cashless transactions. More people are using electronic means such as mobile phones to execute transactions. What’s more, O’ Dea (2021), who is a telecommunication expert in Statista posits that 67% of the global population possess mobile phones. As this number grows in the future, so will mobile phone transactions and cryptocurrency use. Transition: I have discussed how cryptocurrency integrates modern technology. I wish to discuss how cryptocurrency facilitates cross-border transactions. II. The second benefit of cryptocurrency is that it facilitates borderless transactions. In TedX Bermuda, Charles Hoskinson (2014) — a crypto expert- argues that the world will benefit from free currency movement with blockchain adoption. He says that there is no centralized government that can impose regulations over the use of cryptocurrency. People need not convert their currency to the US dollar to trade, as crypto is globally accepted. Still, on this note, it means that it will be cheaper to trade across borders since crypto eliminates currency exchange fees. Transition: I have discussed how cryptocurrency facilitates borderless trading. I will now highlight the third benefit of using cryptocurrency, low government interference. III. The last crucial advantage of using cryptocurrency is that it minimizes government interference. Bunjaku (2017) in the Journal of Economics assert that no single centralized government or organization controls cryptocurrencies. Any person can purchase and sell cryptocurrency at their wish. Additionally, one can use cryptocurrencies to store their wealth without fear of government interference. Consequently, the government has little control as it does for fiat currencies. Restatement: Considering the three points, I believe that cryptocurrency offers more benefits compared to cash. Rebuttal: • My partner has raised concerns over cryptocurrency, citing that the technology is not secure and traced. She says that there is a danger of getting hacked, leading to loss of wealth. In response, I will use Holotescu (2021) scholarly research on blockchain security to assert that cryptocurrency is secure as it uses high-tech encryption to write the transactions. Once a transaction has been executed, the ledger is automatically recorded in all computers in the system. Consequently, a cybercriminal would be forced to hack millions of computers to manipulate the records. However, this is not possible since the illegal activity would be noticed and extinguished in due time. Transition: My partner has also said that cryptocurrency is not widely accepted, which is a downside compared to cash. • She says that only a mere percentage of the world population uses cryptocurrency. As such, adopting it puts one at a disadvantage since they cannot trade with many parties. I would say as more businesses accept crypto; many people will be willing to adopt the technology. Conclusion: Signpost and Summary: In conclusion, I affirm my resolution that cryptocurrency is better than cash. Notably, digital currency is aligned with technology, which has a significant effect on the future of finance. Another point is that cryptocurrency allows borderless transactions, which is necessary for the world as it is fast becoming a global village. Lastly, cryptocurrency is not influenced by a central authority, unlike fiat currency. With that, I believe that cryptocurrency is better than cash, and the future of money lies in cryptocurrency.
