Communication & Mass Media Complete online database After reading the article, complete the following activities: 1. Briefly summarize the main points of the article. 2. Accurately paraphrase the article without plagiarizing the author. 3. Tell us why you chose the article. 4. Describe something you learned from the article, as well as how you will benefit from the information. In other words, how will this information affect your understanding of gender within organizations. The Gender Crisis in Professional Photojournalism: Demise of the female gaze? 1. Main points – Woman will continue to face underrepresentation in the photojournalism industry in the future. – Women income brackets differ from men due to the physical risks’. – Women’s photography work is tunneled and categorized. – How technology and the environment play a role in employment 2. Summary The Authors highlight how the male gaze historically has dominated the visual industry while woman are undermined and objectified resulting in a differentiation in opportunities thus income as well. The photojournalist occupation is thought to be a physical risk and unappealing for women. Therefore, women are more prominently found in the fashion industries rather than the news while men dominate the photojournalism profession (Hadland and Barnett The Gender Crisis In Professional Photojournalism, 3-8). 3. Why I chose this article. The reason why I chose this article was the title. As cliche as it may seem, I judged a book by its title, or in this particular assignment, the journal. For as long as I could remember I have always been interested in photography, mostly being a photographer myself as a side business. However, I never took the time to think about how society deprecates woman in the photograph or photojournalism industry. 4. What I learned. How I benefit from the information. How will this information affect my understanding of gender within organizations? I learned that the world can be limited to its lens. Photos not only capture a moment in time, but they also tell a story. But from who’s point of view, the photographer or the viewer? This article pushes me to think about what is behind the lens. Who is the photographer? How familiar are they with what they are capturing in a photo? Is it from a male or females’ point of view? Adrian and Camilla emphasize, ‘photographs are an increasingly important dimension in conveying the complexity of modern life and its conflict, it would seem just as important that those to encode and construct narratives about our world through powerful images are drawn form a diverse pool.’ and I agree. The disparity in the statistics communicates a segregated industry that appears to be unnoticed. This kind of discourse in photography organizations is creating power structures in the workplace and can lead to hegemony (Miller, 104-105). I chose the article, “Sex As a Determinant of Communication Processes Effectiveness In Organisation on the Basis of Empirical Research,” by Ana Wzi?tek-Sta?ko . The article’s main point is to provide evidence to support the following hypothesis as it relates to the workplace: 1. Men and women communicate differently ; 2. Women understand men better than they do other women; 3. Men and women prefer working in mixed teams (Wzi?tek-Sta?ko 8). The research was conducted using 104 people, half were men and the other half were women, from a Polish electrical equipment manufacturer of various ages with the majority of participants with higher education and tenure with the company. Two findings I found interesting are that men seem to be impacted more by gender in the workplace than women and women did not attribute poor communication as the reason for conflict in the workplace. I was surprised to learn in this study that more men than women adjusted their communication style to the person they were communicating with gender. Overall, the findings of the research did support the hypothesis presented. I chose this article because I have always believed that gender plays a role in effective (or ineffective) communication in the workplace. I am not trying to be sexist, but I personally have found in one-on-one or small group communications, I communicate differently with men than I do women. I have also observed this of others in how they may communicate a message one way to me, and then when presented with a colleague of the opposite gender, they alter their style. This could be either more succinct and to the point, or with their body language, choice of words, or even cadence of their speech. I feel this article supports my ‘feelings,’ which also happens to be a common generalization of women in their communication styles (Wzi?tek-Sta?ko 7). I also believe I will be more selfconscious about my communication style when delivering messages and try to not change it up due to gender. The article also backed up information that while men and women may communicate differently, both genders are aware of the difference in an effort to reduce ineffective communication in the workplace.
