RESPONSE 1 During the progressive era, the National American woman Suffrage Association was formed which is working for women’s suffrage and calling for women’s right to vote. Gradually, with women’s pursuit of rights and equality, Temperance and Women’s Trade Union League were founded.According to Nell Irvin Painter, the ideology that developed during this period was the emergence of many women’s organizations and places of help and care for women such as Hull House which is mentioned in lecture. And at that time there are three kind of work that working class women have accessed to which are sales clerking, domestic work, and factory work. There was a growing sense of hierarchy and advocacy for women’s rights. In order to fit into this trend Jane Adams established the hull house to give women support and help. Just like Addams mentioned that “If women follow only the lines of their traditional activities here are certain primary duties which belong to even the most conservative women, and which no one woman or group of women can adequately discharge unless they join the more general movements looking toward social amelioration through legal enactment.”, Addams expected women to be protected by law in social groups. Ida B. Wells want to avoid some of the lynchings and calumnies because in the last five years five women have been lynched with indescribable cruelty just like she said in her article that “This almost universal tendency to accept as true the slander which the lynchers offer to civilization as an excuse for their crime might be explained if the true facts were difficult to obtain.” She also believes that contempt for the law and racial prejudice constitute the real cause of all lynchings. So in this trend, she hopes to appeal to people to build up the importance of the law and eliminate social prejudice. RESPONSE 2 Q1. The “New Negro” was a term popular during the Harlem Renaissance, referring to a more outspoken advocate of dignity who refused to quietly submit to Jim Crow practices and laws of segregation.The “New Negro” in the 1920s, as cultural restrictions were relaxed across the country, African Americans, especially those living in the inner cities of the North, began serious soul-searching. Around the turn of the century, the black population of the community grew rapidly, mainly due to immigration from the South. The resulting communities are also expanding their boundaries, becoming “black metropolises”. The “Chicago Black Belt” refers to a series of neighborhoods on the city’s South side that, by the mid-20th century, were home to three-quarters of Chicago’s African Americans. The Harlem Renaissance included poetry and prose, painting and sculpture, jazz and swing, opera and dance. What unites these different art forms is their realistic representation of black America, what the writer Langston Hughes called “the expression of our individual black skin selves,” and a new fighting spirit in the defense of civil and political rights. Marcus Garvey believed that all black people should return to their rightful home in Africa, and was actively involved in promoting the World Association for the Improvement of Black People (UNIA), which he founded in 1914. In the 1920s, Garvey organized the black nationalist movement in the United States. 1: From the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, there are three major women’s organizations that our professor introduced. The first one is American Woman Suffrage Association, which is for women to have the right to vote. Adam Jane was the president. The second one is the Women’s Christian Temperance Union that organizing around the issue of temperance for people to avoid the consumption of alcohol and to stop public disturbances and violence associated with alcohol consumption. The third one is the Women’s Trade Union League that organized around issues of labor. One of the ideological trends that developed during this period was that “although women were discriminated against as women, they still divided like men along lines of class, race, and political orientation” (Nell 267). Immigrants worked among the working class, and white women worked in factory jobs. For example, “O’Reilly became vice-president of the New York branch in 1909 and her parents both were working-class Irish immigrants whose poverty had sent her to work in a collar factory at age eleven” (Nell 165). Jane Adams was the president of American Woman Suffrage Association, so she fitted into these trends by encouraging women to stand for their social responsibilities. She said, “it is necessary that woman shall extend her sense of responsibility to many things outside of her own home if she would continue to preserve the home in its entirety” (Adams, 1). She used women’s natural nurtures that women can take care of the home to persuade women to make the society in order. Women should impact the society at large. Student 2 In the nineteenth century, the women’s organizing would like to use women as a weapon to start the alcohol prohibition, but not really give the women an idea that “Women deserve rights.” The nineteenth-century organizing is a transition to more mature thoughts and WCTU (Woman’s Christian Temperance Union) began to have a solid status in the late nineteenth century. Adams states that “ if women would effectively continue their old avocations they must take part in the slow upbuilding of that code of legislation which is alone sufficient to protect the home from the dangers incident to modern life” women could only work for the family but they wished to protect their family from those they are unable to see, and so that they deserve to vote or to get involved in society. In the twentieth century, as the industry emerged and the level to get a job in the industry became lower, women started to find jobs other than at home. Actually, at that time, women can have social standing, but it’s a very low status. They begin to stand for those lower-class people and speak it aloud in the Cooper Union. Ida concluded that “that the silence of concession be broken, and that truth, swift-winged and courageous, summon this nation to do its duty to exalt justice and preserve inviolate the sacred-ness of human life”
