Respond to the discussion

Sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and phosphates

To start this posy I would like to tal about sodium. Sodium is a principal ion responsible for the resting membrane potentials of cells(Saladin,2020). Sodium is the most important solute in finding out the the total body distrubution of water among the fluid compartments(Saladin,2020). Did you know the adult human body needs about .5 g of sodium per day. I actually remeber being told that when i was in grade school but don’t remeber what grade I was in. Potassium is the most abundant cation of the ICF and is the largest deerminant if intracellular osmolarity and cell volume(Saladin,2020). It is the most threatening of all the elctrolytes imbalances(Saladin,2020). In an article called Hypokalemia (Low Level of Potassium in the Blood) by James L. Lewis, III, he states “A larger decrese can cause muscle weakness , cramping, twitches, and even paralysis”(Lewis, p.10, 2020). Calcium, as you may have been told as a kid, makes your bones stronger! It activates the sliding filament mechanisim of muscle contraction(Saladin,2020). Calcium concentration is regulated by parathyroid hormones which work through on what happens when bone depostion and resortion, intestinal absorption of calcium and urinary extraction(Saladin, 2020). In order to create stomach acid, chloride ions are reqired. Chlorise ions also play avery big paert in the controling of the body pH(Saladin, 2020). Phosphates are usually concentrated in the ICF, and they activate many metabolic pathways by phosphorylating enzymes and subtartes such as glucose(Saladin, 2020). Unlike the other imbalances , phosphate homeostasis isn’t as critical as the other electrolytes.

Critcal thinking

When it comes to calcium, growing up ibn public school, all it shows you is how drinking milk can makes your bones grow bigger and stronger. That is kind of true because calcium does make your bones stronger. So thinking of calcium I knew it had something to with helping your bones get stronger. Also just knowing that chlorise and sodium is salt. Mostly everyone loves salt on their food! My mom and dad always cooked dinners and I would always wonder what do the put in it so I would look it up and read the ingredients and just know how much salt to put it in. Salt would always be in the recipe !
