Basic Outline Template
When writing a research paper or presentation, it is a good idea to first create an outline. An outline
helps you to:
• Organize multiple ideas about a topic
• Remember all of your main points
• Ensure that your main points are interconnected
• Present your information in a logical order
• Stay on topic in your writing
Points on an outline do not need to be whole sentences. Instead, use cue words and phrases that
represent ideas. When you write your paper, you will formulate these ideas into full and complete
sentences.
Every paper/presentation should have an introduction, a body consisting of main points and
ideas, and a conclusion. This structure should be represented in your outline.
• The introduction should capture the reader’s attention and introduce your topic.
• The body of your presentation should contain the bulk of your information—your main ideas and
supporting points.
• The conclusion should briefly restate your main point and summarize your final position.

will help you organize the information that will make up the paper. By now, you should have
selected a topic, located some reliable sources to use as references, and taken some notes
on what you’ll include in your paper.
Your outline should include three sections—introduction, body, and conclusion—and show
the topics and subtopics for each section.
Be sure to download the sample outline attached to this assignment in Blackboard and use
it as a reference.
You will be graded on the following:
• Clearly identifying a topic
