Question 1: Monumental Architecture and Sculpture
The cultures we studied this week produced architecture, earthworks, and monumental sculpture, in addition to smaller works of art. Using your course textbook locate three examples of architecture, earthworks or monumental sculpture from three different cultures listed here: Islamic,Chinese, Japanese, or the Americas. **Please note. It says USING YOUR TEXTBOOK, so make sure you choose examples from your text this week so you can get credit. You are choosing three examples (total), but they have to be from a different culture. Monumental means “big” but as long as it’s architecture or sculpture from the chapter you are fine.

In a minimum of 3 well-developed paragraphs address the following questions:
Who created each work of architecture or sculpture? Who commissioned its creation? This will be in the caption. Is the architect or sculptor known? Did someone pay for it to be made? If not, you can just put the culture here.
What historical events or social or cultural influences affected the creation of each work? This is where you discuss the cultural context. Give a few sentences about the culture here. Read about the artwork. Give some information that you learned about it. What was it used for? Where was it located? In what context would you find this in its own time period?
How do the visual characteristics of each work contribute to or enhance its message or meaning? **Use art vocabulary; mosque, arabesque, piers, minaret, mihrab, stylized, piece-mold casting, bracketing, post-and-lintel, mandala, pyramid, tablero, relief sculpture, etc.
Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific details about each work of architecture or monumental sculpture.
Question 2: The Function of Art Objects
Some of the art objects created by the cultures surveyed this week served functional roles in their society. Using your course textbook locate three such objects, one each from the following: Islamic, Chinese, Japanese, or the African. *Your examples MUST be from your textbook this week.
First, completely identify each object you would like to discuss by listing its name, date, and location. **Remember, artwork titles are in italics or quotes, like a book. Same chapters. Now choose any of the example that is NOT painting, sculpture or architecture. You only need three examples.
