M2: BI All Around Us
Topic Discussion Objective: Recognize the fact that Business Intelligence (BI) is all around us and affecting our lives on a daily basis.
There are two parts to this activity:
(a) providing your own original post to the topic description below.
(b) reviewing and reflecting on other posts by other students.
Part A:
Think about businesses or organizations where you are a regular customer (grocery stores, retailers, automotive manufacturers, travel and entertainment, etc.) and pick out one where you have observed what appears to be a BI strategy that is touching you in some way. You may also consider finding someone who works for an organization that uses Business Intelligence and interview them about their organization’s use of BI.
Once you have completed your research post a thread describing that organization’s BI strategy that includes the following:
A general description of that strategy from an external perspective (how you see impacting you or others you know).
Observations on the probable sources of data behind that BI strategy.
Your perceptions of how that BI strategy has impacted your relationship with the organization (pro or con).
Have they crossed any ethical boundaries in your opinion? If so, please describe in general terms.
Finally, reflections on how you think it has affected their overall business. Has it been successful relative to what you think they wanted to accomplish?
Please include links to any external references that augmented your discussion. (Only if you used external sources.)
Part B:
Read other students’ posts and find at least one different from yours that has impacted you as well. Provide a short description of how that second organizational BI strategy has impacted you.
