Patient Education and Physical Examination
A large part of the Medical Assistants responsibilities is to provide education to the patient that supports the doctor’s clinical findings, treatment protocols and education that the physician may have already provided. Having an understanding of common diseases and injuries, their causes, signs, symptoms, treatments, prognosis and preventive measures will help you assist the physician as well as the patient.
You are to choose a diagnosis and perform research using any of your textbooks, other medical books you may have, or reliable internet references. Your research should be in-depth enough for you to produce the following products:
1. A Tri-fold format patient education handout. This can cover education, prevention, treatment, expected outcomes, whatever you think a patient should know about their diagnosis. You must provide one printed copy of this handout.
2. A power-point presentation for the class. This should be detailed enough to educate your fellow students as to the cause, manifestation, signs, symptoms, treatment, outcome and prevention of your chosen disease.
Email the power-point to [email protected] by the start of class on August 15.
3. Provide a 3-5 minute lecture to the class on your diagnosis using your power point (or not). You may use any professional teaching method that helps to educate the class.

This is a patient education tool that you are producing to represent everyone in your doctor’s office. You wouldn’t accept being represented poorly by someone else, so don’t represent your office poorly.
