Textile Industry.

There was much debate about the effects of deindustrialization on American manufacturing.
While the steel and automobile industries were in the spotlight, the textile and clothing industries
were also severely affected. In Empty Mills, Timothy Minchin provides the first book account of
how the two industries have suffered since World War II and the persistent efforts of industry
advocates to reverse the decline. In 1985, the textile industry accounted for one in eight
manufacturing jobs and, unlike the steel and automobile industries, more than fifty percent of the
workforce were women or minorities. Over the past four decades, more than two million jobs
have been lost in the textile and clothing industries alone, and increased production has gone
overseas. Covering history and current trends, Empty Mills will be essential for anyone
interested in economics, work, social history, and the economic significance of the decline of one
of America’s greatest industries.

Robert E. Baldwin and Robert E. Baldwin. 1988. Trade Policy Issues and Empirical Analysis.

Interest in US trade policy in recent years has fueled concerns that the US trade deficit, foreign
government intervention in international markets has given other countries a competitive
advantage over the US and protectionism among them has increased. industrialized countries. In
turn, important analytical developments in international economics have reshaped trade theory,
introducing more formal concepts such as imperfect competition, increasing returns, product
differentiation, and learning effects, and examining political and economic factors. shapes trade
policy decisions. This collection of articles, the result of a conference organized by NBERO
Coapp, applies these new business theories to existing global situations and presents additional
empirical studies based on more traditional business theories. The sound is divided into four
parts. The articles in Part 1 address the problem of imperfect competition by empirically
evaluating the economic impact of various trade policies introduced in areas where the new trade
theory applies. Section 2 isolates the effects of a series of economic variables corresponding to
the actual periods of the protection period and examines how the effects of exogenous changes in
economic conditions vary with the type of protection. Section 3 provides new empirical evidence
on the impact of a country’s firms’ foreign production on the country’s exports. Finally, Chapter 4
discusses two important bilateral issues: recent US-Japan trade tensions and the case of the US
tariff threat against Canadian softwood lumber.
