Interpreting Symbols or Visual Photography Project
25 points
In your minimum 2- page Single spaced TYPED write-up, I would like to do the following
· Pick any symbol that has been debated in American society during the last year. Some examples might include: flags, monuments, protests at sporting events etc. Next, conduct a(n) quick sociological analysis demonstrating how the same symbols or symbolic actions (ex:protests) can carry different meanings by different groups. For example, some might view protests conducted during the national anthem at sporting events as unpatriotic, while for others it exemplifies the very symbol of American freedom. How do you think Sociologists would explain these major contrasts of meaning?
Core Requirements: You must use and define one concept from Chapter 3 in your analysis: symbol, values, beliefs, norms , Please bold them in your write-up. You are also encouraged to use other theoretical perspectives (Functionalism Consensus, Conflict-Critical (political tensions over symbols), Symbolic Interactionism*– meaning) in your write-up. If you plan to do the photography project, please include a minimum 6 pictures with interpretation below every picture. You also still need to include one concept from Chapter 3. Finally, consider uploading your photo essays to [email protected] and see what they say. They may publish your work if it is good.
Note: Visual Sociology Projects also frequently take on different themes on topics like identity, poverty, or even portraits of crime. For example, I will recommend the work by David Schalliol and his photo essay project highlighting the degree of poverty/inequality and lack of basic essential things like lighting in the city.
