CBRNE
CBRNE is an acronym for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives. These types of weapons have the ability to create both mass casualties as well as mass disruption of society. As a result, multiple systems have been put into place to address potential CBRNE events and other emergencies.
National Incident Management System
The National Incident Management System (NIMS) is an emergency preparedness, response, and recovery system designed by the Department of Homeland Security (Anderson et al., 2016). The purpose of the NIMS is to provide a comprehensive, nationwide approach to emergency management, enabling all stakeholders in a community to work together effectively, regardless of the cause, size, location, or complexity of the emergency or threat (Buck et al., 2017). Three components of the NIMS are to command and coordinate incidents, resource management, and information management. While the NIMS does not offer specific plans for any particular incident, the NIMS is still essential to addressing any CBRNE event. In a CBRNE event, the NIMS helps all groups involved in emergency planning, response, and recovery. The NIMS also ensures that vital resources are being distributed to the impacted areas.
Incident Command System
The Incident Command System (ICS) was created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is a part of the NIMS. The ICS is a standardized management tool for meeting the demands of small or large emergency or non-emergency situations (Buck et al., 2017). According to Bennet (2016) the ICS provides guidance for how to organize assets to respond to an incident and processes to manage the response through its successive stages. The organizing of assets and response management is important in any CBRNE event. In any CBRNE event or other emergencies, response assets are divided into five areas. The five areas are command, operations, planning, logistics, and administration/finance. Overall, the ICS provides multiple organizations responding to a CBRNE incident a way to coordinate and focus their efforts efficiently by setting aside overlaps and competition across authorities and jurisdictions (Buck et al., 2017).
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment worn during any hazards. PPE may include items such as gloves, safety glasses, shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits (Akbar-Khanzadeh et al., 2016). PPE is important in any CBRNE event to limit injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, nuclear, and/or any other hazardous material. PPE is also important to protect individuals from physical, electrical, mechanical, and other workplace hazards.
Biblical Worldview
The National Incident Management System, the Incident Command System, and Personal Projective Equipment ensures that the United States is prepared for any emergency, not just CBRNE events. Multiple Bible verses discussing being prepared. One Bible verse states, “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect?”(King James Bible, 1796/2020, Matthew 24:44).
