First discussion question The discussion topic for this part of unit 2 will be Listening and the effects of not listening actively. For this discussion read the 2.3 C “When Nobody Will Listen”(I attached file) Handout from Reflect & Relate. Instructions Consider the following questions: How would you describe the students’ point of view? What about the board’s point of view? What does this case point out in terms of relationship among perspective-taking, empathy, and listening? Student#1 The students of Gallaudet University, the nation’s oldest university for the deaf, point of view came from them wanting a president who could understand and relate to what it is like to be deaf and to represent and lead them. The board wanted someone that they thought would be a good fit overall, with having the ability to hear. The board needed to do a better job of listening to the protesters, they are the students and are ultimately the ones who need to be satisfied with the decision of who their president is. They at least need to be heard as to why they disagree with the decision to have Zinser as their president. They need to listen to why they want a deaf president and not Zinser so they can understand. If they could have listened to each other there would have been a lot more healthy communicating and more understanding on both sides. Both need to do a better job of listening, understanding, and responding. Student#2 The students’ point of view was that their concerns weren’t being acknowledged by the board. From their perspective, they were being ignored and disrespected. The students wanted to have deaf representatives for their school to show that deaf people are capable enough of being representatives for a university school board. It is very reasonable for the students to be upset, considering that the board is disregarding the voices of hundreds of their students. From the board’s point of view, they had no empathy for what the students were demanding. The board, particularly Spilman, believed that deaf people were incapable of performing the tasks necessary as a board representative. They ignored the students ideas and believed that it was for the best of the university to have a board with people who aren’t deaf. This case points out very important views of perspective-taking, empathy, and listening. The board had a completely different perspective than the students, but without having empathy and/or listening to what the students were asking, the issue worsened. If the board were to listening impartially to what the students had to say and had empathy for the emotions of the students who wanted deaf representatives, there possibly could have been a much easier solution to the problem. student#3 The student’s point of view is that the board isn’t taking them serious and Jane Spilman, chair of the board wasn’t listening to them and defended the board. The students protested so that they can be heard and understood by the board. The board’s point of view is that they’re just deaf students and that they’re “not able to function in a hearing world.” Although they feel this way, there’s a lack of defense toward the deaf students and misrepresentation as well. In terms of relationships among perspective-taking, this case points out miscommunication on both sides. In terms of relationships among empathy, this case points out lack of empathy and lack of understanding because of the miscommunications. In terms of relationships among listening, this case points out lack of listening Student#4 The students’ point of view was that they were being misrepresented by not having a deaf person as their president, but rather having a well able person. They protested against the decision but after being struck down by the board. The board’s point of view was that needed a well able person to serve as the president. But after being faced with protests from the students, they fulfilled some demands that were established. This case shows the direct relationship between perspective-taking, empathy, and listening, because if one of them is missing, it causes conflict. And it’s extremely important to understand where people are coming from when they’re speaking and try to find a way to resolve any issues. Second discussion question Ccononsider the following questions: What is the best way to prepare for a persuasive speech on the topic of abortion? How is this different from how to prepare for an informative speech on the topic of abortion? Which of the four delivery types tends to be the most effective? Why? Why should you avoid reading when giving a speech? Student#1 the first thing that needs to be done is research, who the audience is, their demographics, attributes, opinions and actions. Basically see what your audiences points of views are. . Than research needs to be done on the topic of abortion, the pros and cons, and opposing views and a purpose is needed. A informative speech is just giving the audience information and not trying to convince them, the audience would decide with your information. I believe the extemporaneous delivery is the most effective because the audience wants to see that you know what your talking about. You have to show a level of understanding on the topic. If the audience doesn’t feel like you know your topic than they are lost. We should avoid reading because it show that you are not prepared and have no understanding of your topic. Student#2 1.) The best way to prepare for the topic of abortion is to do a lot of research and know what you’re talking about because it is a sensitive topic. Along with research, you must organize your information and make sure everything is where it should be, especially when you are trying to be persuasive it is important to strategically organize it. And finally, you should practice multiple times to make sure you know how you want to talk to your audience because how you convey your message can impact the outcome you desire. 2.) This persuasive speech is different from how you’d prepare for an informative speech because you don’t have to worry about trying to convince your audience to take the side you want. For an informative speech, it would be more important to make sure you have the right information because that is the main goal of the speech. 3.) Out of the four delivery types, nonverbal is the most effective. At first, I thought verbal communication was the most effective because it’s the easiest way, but nonverbal communication can show way more meaning and is more powerful than words. People can say anything they want verbally, but actions really do speak louder than words. 4.) You should avoid reading while giving a speech because it will make the overall speech be effective. Nobody wants to hear someone that is robotic because it doesn’t sound natural and might give the impression that the speaker is not being sincere .Student#3 1. I think the best way to prepare for a persuasive speech on abortion, is to thoroughly research the topic and take notes on the most important information you can find that helps your case. Also, practicing your speech to yourself or those close to you would be helpful to make sure you are getting the point across, and exuding confidence. 2. Well, an informative speech is more focused on facts, not so much as persuasion. 3. I think the best delivery method is extemporaneous, because it includes tons of preparation. This is the best way to engage with your audience and make sure that you know the topic your are presenting. 4. You should avoid reading when giving a speech because it takes away your credibility and it takes away your connection with the audience. Student#4 The best way to prepare for a persuasive speech on abortion would be to learn about abortion, find your main points, and find strong persuasive evidence to back up your main points. I think this is different than preparing for an informative speech because when preparing for an informative speech you have to become an expert on the topic and in this case it is abortion. You need to be prepared for questions and use evidence to back up your claims and source the information you find. Out of the four delivery types, the most effective and most popular is the extemporaneous delivery this is because you are very prepared for the speech and you only use brief notes to reference when speaking to remember your key points. You should avoid reading when giving a speech because it makes you look unprepared and unknowledgeable on the topic you are presenting.
