Chapter 1: The Benefits of Partnering in Business

Having a healthy relationship with the people you work with will increase everyone’s chances for success when working on and completion of assigned projects. So, what are the benefits of a positive work environment?

When team members work together and get along it leads to higher morale which increases respect amongst the team and that respect helps keep the line of communication open. This will in turn lead to less mistakes, reduce cost, increase production, and lower safety incidents.

To maintain this relationship team members must do the following,

Communicate often. Sharing ideas and concerns that can affect the project can reduce the number of issues that might arise while working on the project. Catching and sharing these issues early shows loyalty and builds trust within the team.

Being consistent and trustworthy, lets the team know that you are reliable and trusting and willing to see the project through to the end. Having trust among the team allows the process run more efficiently and create a lasting bond with the members.

Avoid gossip. To maintain trust, members must refrain from gossiping about each other. This is one of the quickest ways to ruin a trusting environment which could cause the team to fail.

Supporting fellow team members is one of the best ways to build team camaraderie. It creates a relaxing team environment and shows everyone on the team that they are supported through good and bad.

Remaining positive while interacting with people will make people want to do business with you. They become relaxed and want to hear what you have got to say. This works really well when trying to build clientele.

You have got to know the companies rules and guidelines. Knowing these will help you to better understand why the company does what it does. Weather it is making a product for a specific company or offering ideas on how to better support the team. These guidelines will help keep everyone on track.

Delivering quality work on time is what the customer wants. It is good to remember that the customer is what drives any industry. Having a trusting and reliable team will understand this and make sure that the customer is happy. Next, we will discuss 8 different ways that will help build workplace relationships.

As a leader you will need to know not only your strength and weaknesses but also your teams’ strengths and weaknesses. Using this information when working on a project or networking will increase your success. As a leader you do not want to put someone in a sales role if they lack communication skills or not good with talking to people. Being able to recognize what people’s strengths and weaknesses are and using them accordingly in an organization will benefit the overall corporation. This will also enable the leader to train team members in areas that they are weak in which will help the team member as well.

A leader must take the time to evaluate, listen, and develop a relationship with the team member. Doing this will create an understanding between the leader and team member. It will hopefully create a bond as well. The quickest way for them to understand each other is for both the leader and team member to ask questions and listen to each other.

Both must know when to ask for help and offer help. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in the issue that they fail to see the solution. Having someone on the outside looking in is a good way to look at the problem from a different angle. This gives the team members and leader an advantage when solving problems.

It is always good when the leader knows each team members role. It creates an understanding between the two and ensures the team member that the leader knows and appreciates each role. It also enables the leader to assist the team member if there are any issues that they may not be able to solve.

Everyone on the team must be present and keep their commitments so that the project is successful.

Networking:

There are three forms of networking.

Operational, Personal, Strategic.

Operational networking consists of using contacts to complete task efficiently, within budget, and in a timely manner.

Personal Networking is using contacts to gather information on items or personal that can be used to complete the project.

Strategic Networking focuses on future priorities and issues that arise.

When building a network for a new company many people use online resources such as google, online advertisements, social media, and word of mouth. All of these are very good networking tools, but the company will need to make sure that their product stays up to date. A good example of this is the savannah morning newspaper. It was a very popular way to communicate many years ago, but the company waited to go online which cost the company money. Companies must be willing to upgrade, and a good networking plan will help.

Chapter 2: Strategic Thinking

One of the best ways to utilize strategic thinking is by setting goals with the team members. This should be done on an annual basis and the team member should be involved in the goal setting process. The process that is well known for setting goals is the SMART process.

· Specific: The more specific and focused your goals, the clearer your target. Your team’s goals should answer who, what, where, and why.

· Measurable: If you can’t measure progress, how will you know if you’re meeting your goal? Help employees set goals that are measurable, with clear metrics and milestones for tracking progress and defining success.

· Attainable: It’s good to aim high, but make sure your employees are also realistic in their goals. Do they have the tools and resources to make it happen? Is the timeframe realistic? Reaching for unattainable goals is a great way to discourage and disengage employees when they fail to meet their goals. So, make sure they set goals that stretch them without breaking them.

· Relevant: Goals should align with broader team and business objectives. Help employees understand those priorities so they can home in on goals that make sense for them and make sense for the business.

· Time-bound: Goals without a deadline kill performance. Time constraints help drive performance because they create a sense of urgency. However, too much time can slow performance. And too little time can lead to burnout from overworking or giving up on the goal altogether. Help your employees set fair and realistic timeframes for achieving their goals.

When discussing the goals, they need to be clear and understood by everyone involved. This means all levels of the organization will need to understand the goals. Using the attached format will help make sure that happens.

4 key qualities of strategic thinkers

Bring to your mind a professional leader you admire. Have you chosen them because of their innovation, intelligence, or ability to engage audiences? Or maybe you like their capacity to critique process and procedure while still being receptive to feedback and change?

If your model leader possesses any of the above qualities, they’re a strategic thinker. Here are four qualities that all strategic thinkers possess, and continue to work on throughout their lives:

1. They’re always learning

Strategic thinking skills are developed by committing to constant learning and self-improvement.

Whether it’s learning from their own experiences, the experiences of others, books, presentations, networks, conferences or junior colleagues, strategic thinkers don’t dismiss any potential sources of education.

2. They always seek advice from others

In the spirit of being able to prepare for the future and make constant improvements, strategic thinkers’ welcome feedback and advice from others.

They test ideas and concepts and ensure that criticisms are examined and incorporated where relevant. This process makes their plans and strategies as robust and steadfast as possible.

3. They’re not afraid to take risks

Great strategic thinkers understand that professional excellence doesn’t always emerge from a cookie-cutter approach.

After careful consideration, they take risks on new ideas, innovative solutions and unique pitches, prepared for both success and failure, and always willing to learn from their mistakes.

4. They never forget organizational purpose

Whether a business builds intuitive websites for clients or sells diverse share portfolios, strategic thinkers will never neglect their purpose or people.

If the strategic thinking and planning doesn’t revolve around these two key elements, it has failed to be strategic at all.
