Labor unrests are among the contemporary issues in the international aviation industry. The industry heavily relies on specialized personnel, thus workers strikes can completely paralyze operations at airports or airlines. Various airlines across the globe have been forced to halt their operations due to pilot walkouts. For example, KLM and Air France were recently hit by a two-week pilot strike which cost the airlines about 500 million euros in losses. Lufthansa has also reported suffering significant losses resulting from pilot strikes. This problem is not confined to Europe alone. In September 2019, workers outsourced from a private contractor (Eulen America) by American Airlines and Delta went on strike at four airports, affecting the service delivery of these two airlines (McMillan, 2019). On 15 November 2019, South African Airline (SAA) commenced a one-week strike that the Kempton Park-based airline estimated to cost at least 50 million Rands per day (Mashishi, 2019). Such strikes and walkouts have been experienced in other parts of the country. The purpose of this paper is to examine the key causes of labor unrests in airlines and how this issue can be addressed. This will be achieved by identifying the reasons behind various documented airline workers strikes and synthesizing the information, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions.
