Greek life at universities
Paper 3: Analysis Leading to Proposal

Objective: We’ve been working on a very serious theme in college: Greek life and its future. We’re going to extend that theme to our third and final paper. The reason we’re doing this is because it’s a complex theme that requires careful analysis before a proposal can be made. We can’t just get rid of Greek life; it’s considered a major part of the University. However, we also know that it cannot continue in its current state. Therefore, you’re being asked to analyze the problem and come up with solutions. All of the work we’ve been doing has led up to this point. Success starts with reading the directions carefully. Follow the guideline I have given you.

Directions: You’ll be writing a 5-6 page paper. Here are some guidelines for you to consider:

1) You should already have some analysis generated for this paper through our challenge. 2) Your paper needs to include multiple lenses from which you can analyze and view the

potential problems and solutions. 3) The structure of your paper should be as follows.

a. Introduction b. Literature Review – This will consist of two informational paragraphs that

introduce the important research on the topic. What do professionals have to say on this topic? This is where you build up your Ethos for the reader.

i. Your research in the literature review MUST be peer reviewed. This is very important.

c. Body paragraphs i. One informational body paragraph that analyzes the importance of the lens

you are discussing. ii. One generative paragraph that analyzes toward your overall proposal for

how to address the issue. iii. Use research sparingly and strategically in these paragraphs. I gave you

notes on the three ways to use research in college papers. Look over those notes and use your research in these paragraphs strategically. Remember, however, it is YOUR analysis that will ultimately get you the most points.

iv. Make sure all research is cited using MLA style. 1. Ex. According to Smith, “” (33).

a. Note, if I didn’t say Smith’s name, I would have had to place it in the parentheses like this, (Smith 33).

d. Conclusion e. Works Cited page.

i. Your Works Cited page needs to come at the end of your paper. ii. Your works cited page needs to follow the guidelines of current MLA

style. iii. It should be in alphabetical order based on the author’s last name.

4) Make sure you follow the college-level body paragraph notes for your body paragraphs. I will be looking for the steps in each body paragraph.

5) I will especially be considering how well you write your analysis sections for each paragraph. Remember, informational paragraphs are about informing the reader; generative paragraphs are about generating meaning out of the information.

6) Take a look at the syllabus and the guidelines for our out-of-class assignments. If you don’t follow those guidelines, you can already start knocking points off of your own paper—and we don’t want that.

7) You can guarantee that you’ll be losing points if you don’t adhere to the one paragraph, one idea policy. I want to see you building meaning from one particular idea.

8) Do not try and make your paper conform to a five-paragraph essay. Your ideas need to dictate how many paragraphs you need.
