The organization I selected was from the Cancer Action Network to prohibit e-cigarette flavor tobacco products, to stop the tobacco industry from marketing to kids and specific targeted communities, and to force the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate the tobacco industry (Cancer Action Network, n.d.). The action taken was to sign a petition for it to be read to Congress. The problem this organization is trying to address is the use of e-charrettes amongst teens, as the CDC reports the number of teens that used e-cigarettes doubled from 2013 to 2014 (Rubin, R., 2014). Tobacco is profiting by making flavors that target young adults and children such as bubble gum and cotton candy. As we know, there are many disparities in tobacco use, and one of them includes poverty status and race and ethnicity (Eysler et al., 2016) which is why it is important to advocate for specific communities and age groups that are targeted by tobacco.
One of the health communication principles is key messages, the Cancer Action Network clearly gives the audience the message about what the tobacco industry is doing, targeting young adults and children with kid-friendly flavors that entices them to smoke. It clearly states its goals for the petition signing to inform Congress about regulating tobacco and the prohibition of certain flavors in tobacco.
An advocacy principle applied to the advocacy action taken is policy solution by clearly defining the problem, how it impacts our youth and how it can be prevented. It states the failure we are seeking to address (flavored tobacco) and what can be done at this time to take action (Eysler et al., 2016).
