Please follow the instruction doc Profile of a Global Media Platform /Media Series (news broadcast outlet, film company, social media platform) (1) Complete a (2000-2500) word critical analysis of a global media platform/media-series your choice. It is strongly suggested that this second subject be related to your Global Media Personality first paper. Your platform/media-series can be a radio, television or cable outlet, film company, streaming service, social media platform, humanitarian NGO or any other species of organization. You must make a case as to how this organization’s output will help you explore key themes that we have encountered up to that point in the semester. These would include any combination of the themes that you have explored in your Global Media Personality paper(I uploaded this paper, so you can see it). *Keep in mind that your chosen platform can absolutely be American in origin (though transnational/multinationals are very much encouraged). You must make a case for how the output/content/traffic on this platform impacts to the global community, either through reach, audience, representation or by some other metric you can argue for. *IMPORTANT: You are strongly encouraged to use this second project to build upon your Global Media Icon Biopic(I uploaded the Global Media Icon Biopic doc). The idea is that you will spend the semester exploring a unified field of inquiryone that a biopic and media/platform review would speak to. For example, if you written about Mark Zuckerberg for your first piece, you might write about the impact and acquisition of Instagram in your second piece. If you’ve written about Oprah Winfrey in your first piece, you might consider exploring her most recent innovation with the O network and magazine. If you’ve written about Kylie Jenner and/or the Kardashians you might consider writing about innovations on their Twitter handles. (2) Include a minimum (3)-article bibliography that you have drawn from in your piece. (3) Creatively title and subtitle your piece. Global Media Icon Biopic Robin Rene Roberts’s Theoretical Framework Robin Rene Roberts is an American television broadcaster born on 23rd November 1960 in Tuskegee, Alabama, United States. During her early childhood period, Roberts grew up in Mississippi and later in life. She attended Southeastern Louisiana University, where she graduated with a degree in communications and was also a basketball player during her university tenure. She was regarded as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in this beautiful game. Early 1983, she sharpened her broadcasting skills. She was allowed to be a sports reporter and anchor in one of the local stations in Mississippi, Atlanta, Biloxi, Tennessee, Georgia, Nashville, and Hattiesburg. However, in 1990 Roberts joined ESPN as a senior sportscaster and the host of the sports center. During this period, Roberts decided to lend out her talent and passion to Good morning America and ABC News. Robin Rene Roberts’ Journalism journey is a clear illustration that the African American ladies can also perform at big stages and be offered equal opportunities in the US’s big media houses. She has had over 30 years of experience in the journalism sector, and she has been one of the most admired journalists in the sector (Herman, 1988). Nonetheless, Roberts is also perceived to be one of the role models the young journalists are looking up to. She is one of the most successful African American journalists who has played a vital role in changing the orientalism perspective and gone against what the masters of the slaves strongly believed in. Black journalists such as Dorothy Butler Gilliam played a vital role in the fight against brutality and injustices towards black journalists during the civil rights movements. She mobilized several communities and provided exclusive and detailed information that the other Media would not have provided. The American journalism industry is considered to be backward or lagging when it comes to diversity. The civil rights movement, the gay and transgender movement, the intersectional feminist movement, the black lives matter, and other several movements and organizations in the US have gained popularity in their fight towards embracing inclusivity, diverseness, and elimination of discrimination in the media houses or newsrooms (Lissitsa and Kushnirovich, 2019). As the country keeps developing, there is a need for the media houses to have journalists representing sexual diverseness, ethnic and even gender, hence making it possible to cover social issues and provide detailed information about them. A perfect example is what Robin Rene Roberts achieved, yet she was from a minority group. There has been much gender and ethnic diversity improvement in modern newsrooms since there has also been an increase in demand for inclusivity in the journalism industry. According to studies conducted recently in the United States of America, the Hispanic, Asians, and blacks make up close to 5% of the individual newsroom personnel at the online news publications and the traditional prints compared to their US counterparts who make up close to two-thirds of the employees hence indicating that much need to be done. There is a need for diversity in the journalism sector. Robin Roberts was a perfect example that there is inclusivity in the journalism industry. However, despite this, the majority of journalists are still complaining about racism in the newsrooms. In the recent past, journalists turned out to the Twitter chronicles to express their experiences and issues surrounding racism and gender discrimination in the newsrooms and news centers. The American Society of News Editors set in the year 1978 to promote and embrace Newsroom diversity; however, it remains far from being achieved. This is because the American newsrooms still lack racial diversity despite African American individuals such as Robin Robertson being one of the most followed individuals on the video cameras. According to Chomsky (1988), the journalistic sector is regarded to be backward when it comes to the sector of promoting and most vitally hiring the Negroes mainly because the press and the media are still believing in the notion that the whites seem to be perfect and well equipped than their African counterparts. The fact that the whites and the colonists have dominated the media houses illustrates how racial discrimination is promoted, making it hard for them to employ the non-whites because of their policies. Early 1979, the American Society of News Editors promised the US citizens that by the end of the year 2000, the percentage of both the ethnic and racial minorities in the main newsrooms that would be similar to that of the population, but many media houses did not achieve the set target (Kushnirovich, 2019). The target was not achieved since no changes were made, as hiring a diverse team in the newsroom is the first step towards eliminating discrimination. It is up to the American mass media and journalism industry to follow ESPN’s footsteps and other media houses to hire competent African American journalists just like they hire the American journalists. This will play a vital role in promoting inclusivity, ethnic diversity and, most importantly, eliminate discrimination. Robin Rene Roberts’s employment and the achievements she accomplished in the industry are incomparable. She was able to change the orientalism perspective and the way the whites or colonists perceived the Africans. The whites perceived the Africans or the blacks to be only useful in farms, but they were shocked to find out that Robin Rene Roberts had become one of the most admired and influential journalists. According to Chomsky (1988), the mass media’s primary role is to reach a large or greater audience by providing them with a clear image of what is happening across the globe, such as the policies set up by the government, roles, and activities of the government. Mass media is also regarded as the primary communicative tool that the government can use to pass to the public. So this means that the public or general audience depends on the mass media industry to provide them with information regarding social issues, culture, entertainment, and political issues. It is also the role of the media that pass educative information to its audience. In the GMA, Robin Rene Roberts’s appearance on the screens was an indication the world was making big steps in overcoming cultural imperialism. She also was able to win the hearts of several American citizens as she persuaded people to embrace change in attitude towards the black, beliefs, opinions, culture, and most importantly, on how they handle issues concerning voting, dowry, and religious convictions. Nonetheless, the media also has the right to remain independent, and any party should not influence it. The media also has the right to hold those in power accountable for their actions, which can be achieved by conducting interviews, conducting private investigations, and impartial reporting. The United States of America strongly believes in media freedom. The media also has the responsibility of upholding high governance standards as the freedom of expression is fundamental in promoting democracy. Media has also given politicians a platform to air out their manifestos and plans, and that’s why some people consider it an enabler for democracy. However, it is also believed that some wealthy and powerful individuals may influence media independence as some of the political classes have the powers to set up policies that hinder media freedom hence influencing their day-to-day operations. Influencing the media freedom may give wrong information to the public, hence hurting some of the audiences, which may affect the media houses financially as they lose their audiences. The primary objective of mass media organizations is to generate profits. Most production companies heavily depend on the available finances for them to transform. The TV shows and films’ production cannot be made possible if the media houses lack financiers. In most media houses, financiers tend to invest money and hope that the film will have generated and returned the invested amount of money by the end of the project. So if the media house decides to be influenced by the wealthy class, it likely might end up suffering when it comes to financial issues (Lissitsa, 2019). The mass media companies may also decide to employ individuals who can influence the audiences to watch their programs to help them generate some income. An example of this is how the media chose to employ Robin Rene Robert, who ended up being an influential and role model to several audiences, generating profits. Through the filmmakers and the producers, the mass media makes it easy for the audience to understand the messes and issues surrounding the media as it acts as an instructive function. Some media houses opt to cultivate knowledge rather than relaying information only. The art of cultivating knowledge shapes the audience’s socialization process. Nonetheless, media also can manipulate, persuade and influence society together with controlling the world in the negative and also in a positive way. The media reports controversial stories and articles without considering them to be fact or not, and the public is forced to believe everything without questioning the reports. The most significant thing the media has done is influencing significantly how individuals or people are perceived, demonstrating that the media can change an individual’s career in a flash. It might also affect people and their way of life. An example is how several sportspeople and celebrities in the US chose to ignore it for them to perform well. Despite Robin Rene Roberts being an African American, she pursued her career well and became one of America’s most successful journalists. She used the ESPN media to relay that any person, regardless of race or skin color, can work for the USA’s biggest media houses (Lissitsa, 2019). She dealt with the pressure of performing well like her American colleagues. Mass media in recent years has profoundly impacted American society, especially on the American culture. We live in a century that people depend on communication and information to keep moving in the right direction. Media also plays a vital role in enabling the citizens to perform their daily activities, including education, work, health care, relationships, and traveling. In recent times, it is normal for an individual to wake and switch on the TV and make phone calls to gather information on what is going on across the globe. However, despite media playing a vital role in embracing communication, it has also had a big negative impact on the kids and the teenagers, something that the stakeholders should take the necessary steps and actions. The media generates a lot of money from day-to-day advertisements as it informs people to buy what they feel is good. We, the citizens, tend to buy what we saw advertised on the TVs as we believe the item or commodity being advertised suits us well. These are some of the youths’ major challenges as they buy what they see on TVs without researching to find out whether it is good or bad. Moreover, not everything being aired on TV pleases everyone. According to Mirrlees (2013), in 2014, when Roberts announced she was a gay won, not everyone was pleased with the announcement as most people didn’t expect someone like her to be of that kind. However, the media industry supported her regardless of her sexual orientation and skin color. Robin Rene Robert is a media iconic because of the several achievements she achieved in the media and journalism industry. Her appearance on the TV screens was a true picture of what the world is doing in the fight towards ending cultural imperialism. She also had to overcome the pressure of being an African American journalist and the issues surrounding her sexual orientation to become among the most successful journalists in American history. Besides, she also instilled the values, beliefs, and behaviors that only focused on improving American citizens’ well-being. It is also the media’s role to ensure that whatever information they publish to the public is fact-based, genuine and that the media houses should have the freedom to express their views without being manipulated freely.
