Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) launched a campaign dubbed “No Limits” to raise awareness on how gender stereotypes impact young girls. In collaboration with the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) and Mattel, MBUSA reached out to more than 100 organizations (“MercedesBenz USA Tackles Gender Stereotypes With No Limits Campaign”, 2020). The program was meant to protest gender stereotypes and approximately 50,000 girls were engaged. MBUSA was also aiming to empower young girls by showcasing its commitment to society. The No Limits initiative launched by MBUSA was a success because of various reasons. First, the company’s initiative was effective. Mattel in partnership with MBUSA issued cast toy replicas of Mercedes Benz 220SE to the 50,000 participating girls. As a result of this program, Ewy Rosqvist participated in the Argentine Touring Grand Prix becoming the first woman to do so and win. Around 100 programs were developed around Ewy’s story and would inspire young girls, create a positive role model for them, and increase awareness about the consequences of gender stereotypes. 2 Further, MBUSA’s initiative was a success because it partnered with other organizations such as Brooklyn’s Digital Girl Inc., Atlanta Public Schools, NGCP, and Mattel. Also, MBUSA formulated measurable objectives such as supporting the entire campaign to raise the brand’s reputation and awareness. Others include supporting ongoing media, launch a campaign that would trigger a countrywide debate on how to eliminate and identify gender stereotypes and enhance positive perception. Besides, several tactics were applied to achieve the objectives. MBUSA used Ewy’s story as its icon and developed engaging videos that would prompt girls to be creative in areas that do not involve the typical gender roles (“Mercedes-Benz USA Tackles Gender Stereotypes With No Limits Campaign”, 2020). Also, the press releases were distributed via BusinessWire to more than 100 outlets. The local and national media were invited to capture photos and videos that were later published on social media, online, and broadcast channels. Notably, MBUSA developed a No Limit curriculum to guide mentors and parents. Through the No Limits program, Ewy served as a positive model to girls thus encouraging them to pursue their ambitions. If I were the campaign manager, I would take a different approach to tackle the problem highlighted in this case. I would collaborate with stakeholders to review teacher training programs, textbooks, and curricula to reduce gender stereotypes in schools. Through collaboration, I would ensure that networks, tutorials, and apprenticeship programs are developed to encourage and promote the involvement of women in STEM fields (De Melendez & Beck, 2018). The program would also ensure neutral and shared toys and games, enhance equality of men and women in educational projects, collaborate with families to prevent sexist behavior, and enhance the provision of school materials that are non-sexist. Such a program would offer a long-term solution to this issue. 3 There are several lessons learned from this case about conducting a PR campaign. First, reliable partnerships are effective in implementing a campaign since they can help design a brand. They also assist in the distribution of the brand to the targeted population. Second, it is worth coming up with an icon that will increase positive engagement with the consumers. Third, selecting the best media platform can facilitate success because it could support the establishment and activation of a campaign. Also, social reach, impressions, and media placements can drive positive perception and overall visibility. Lastly, one can deduce that measurable objectives are crucial as they evaluate the campaign’s success. 4 References De Melendez, W. R., & Beck, V. (2018).
