The film Hook is about a man who lost who he was before he grew up. Within this film, Peter Banning is taken back to when he was a child and is forced to encounter his old nemesis, Hook. We look into the self-concept of Peter Banning and Tinkerbell. In the film, we can see in many scenes between Tinkerbell and Peter how these influences have impacted who they are and their relationship with one another. For example, after Peter, Moira, and Wendy return home from the event to find the children missing, Wendy reminds Peter of his past. Reluctant to believe it, Tinkerbell eventually shows up to convince Peter that he must come back to Neverland to retrieve his children. Refusing to believe Tinkerbell is even real, Peter continues to deny that he is encountering her. Peter proceeds to tell himself that the events unfolding were unrealistic, Tinkerbell finally hits him on the head. As he slowly becomes unconscious, Tinkerbell wraps him up in a sheet and flies him off to Neverland. In regards to Peter, he continuously denies that Tinkerbell is real as he reminds himself of how he is an adult. This shows how Peter’s lifestyle of all work and no play has caused him to have no understanding of an imagination. Because he is an adult is his justification as to why Tinkerbell should not be real. Whereas, Tinkerbell is determined to make him believe and return back to Neverland. Although Peter is blatantly stating he does not believe in her, she continues to disregard his remarks. Tinkerbell believes in herself and Neverland is her home. Regardless of how much Peter is denying the situation, she knows what is true. In the scene where Peter encounters the Lost Boy for the first time in many years, Tinkerbell begins to go around screaming that ‘Pan is back’. As the Lost Boys see Peter, they immediately deny that it is Peter Pan. Soon, Rufio comes riding in, jumping on a vine and swinging down to place himself directly in front of Peter with his sword in hand. Seeing the danger of Rufio’s actions, Peter demands to speak to an adult as everyone was merely just a child. Clarifying that only pirates were adults, the Lost Boys start to chase Peter around trying to take him down. During this time, Tinkerbell begins to chase after them all trying to convince them who Peter really is. When the boys finally trap Peter, Rufio draws a line in the sand to separate who believed Tinkerbell and who did not. During this scene Peter is disdained towards the Lost Boys. He has been in a world where if you want answers, you do not speak to a child. He is still in denial not just about Neverland but about the accusation that he is Peter Pan. He has been in a world where he is Peter Banning, the adult who works a lot and has a family. But, Tinkerbell continues to be persuasive in the fact that Peter is Peter Pan. This is why she flew after the Lost Boys and tried to convince Rufio that she was correct. She has only ever known Neverland and all she does is believe. To not believe, especially Peter Pan, is not a concept that Tinkerbell can grasp which is why she is so persistent. Lastly, in the final fight between Captain Hook and Peter Pan, they sword fight to the death. As Captain Hook continues to antagonize Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, including Tinkerbell, Maggie, and Jack cheer Peter on. Fighting back and forth, one moment Hook has Peter backed into a corner to the next where Hook is helpless. Finally, as Peter has Hook on the ground, with the help from his children, Peter chooses not to kill Captain Hook. Within that second, Hook maneuvers to trap Peter. Pinned up against a crocodile statue, Tinkerbell flies in to help Peter. Forcing his hook to strike the statue, it comes crashing down on Captain Hook. Peter’s ability to stop the urge to end Captain Hook shows the morals that he has. After years of fighting and harassment by Captain Hook, Peter chooses to not continue the violence and let him live. Peter shows the good side of him by allowing Captain Hook to live. Tinkerbell, also, shows how she was unable to stand by and allow Hook to hurt Peter. She flies into the line of fire and pushes Captain Hook’s hook up towards the statue. Displaying her moral values as she risks her wellbeing to help her friend in need. The morals, values, and culture Tinkerbell and Peter have reflects who they are as people. Peter is a good man who has morals and beliefs that have shaped him into who he is today. Tinkerbell is a faithful and loyal person, which is shown throughout these three scenes. The influences that have reflected on their identity allow Peter and Tinkerbell to have such a strong bond. Their morals and how they were raised are similar, but the loyalty that Tinkerbell has for Peter may be more than vice versa. Reflected appraisal is the concept that how one sees themselves is based on the assumption of how they think people see them. A person’s opinion can be reflected onto another’s self-concept. How a person is treated can impact how that person sees themselves. This is portrayed often throughout the film, Peter and Tinkerbell’s self- concept is directly impacted by the reflected appraisal of other characters. For instance, when Tinkerbell and Peter finally return back to Neverland to rescue Maggie and Jack, Peter wakes up to be surrounded by pirates. Unsure and confused, Peter begins to walk around asking for help as Tinkerbell tries to tell Peter to lay low. Sure enough, Peter is dragged over to Captain Hook. Once the confirmation is made by —-, Captain Hook wants Peter to prove himself. Forcing him to climb up the mast and across the sail to rescue his children. Stiff and clenching on for life, Peter slowly makes his way across the sail to unsuccessfully rescue his children. Surprised by Captain Hook, During the scene where Peter is determined to rescue his children, he comes across the old hideout. Running his fingers across the names carved into the tree, Peter begins to remember. Sliding down into the hideout, he started to reminisce on the times he spent in Neverland. From Self-fulfilling prophecy is the idea that the expectation of a person or event causes that expectation to more than likely become true. It is the concept that if you continue to doubt yourself or believe in yourself, eventually it will become true. As seen in the film, Tinkerbell and Peter consistently encounter events that become true due to the expectation of others. Specifically, when the Lost Boys sit down to have dinner with Peter they begin to bring out steaming hot pots, bowls, and plates. Hungry and ready to eat, the Lost Boys start to eat and as the excitement slowly washes from Peter’s face he realizes there is nothing there. Confused as to why the Lost Boys were pretending to eat, Peter sits quietly. Then, Tinkerbell states to Peter that he must learn to think like Pan. Shortly after, Rufio becomes argumentative with Peter. As the two are making childish remarks towards each other, the Lost Boys encourage Peter. And just like that, food begins to appear on the table. Astonished as to what is occurring, the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell say ‘You’re doing it Peter’. As Peter had not believed the events that were unfolding in front of him, he was in complete denial. Unsure whether he was dreaming or hallucinating, until this night Peter was incapable of being in touch with his imagination. With the help and expectation of the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell, they knew Peter could imagine. Eventually, Peter was able to see the food that was nonexistent a couple minutes prior. Up until this moment, Tinkerbell knew Peter had the ability to believe. She knew that deep down Peter still had it in him. With constant persistence, she imposed that Peter would be able to believe again. From the beginning, she always had faith that Peter could become Peter Pan once again. In conclusion, Peter and Tinkerbell have a strong relationship. Peter’s self-concept was distorted when he went into the real world. He had his morals, but his imagination was no longer there. By coming back to Neverland, his self-concept was changed for the better. Whereas Tinkerbell never changed, as she continued to be the one who believes not just in herself but in those around her. Peter’s self-concept is based on his family where Tinkerbell’s self-concept is based on those in Neverland.
