Cambrian College Business Process Mapping Models Review

Cambrian College Business Process Mapping Models Review

Two student models are attached for you to review and complete these Feedback Questions:

How many flow objects are in this process model (include activities, events and gateways)? The sub process should be counted as an object, and each object within it should be counted as well.

Are there any syntax issues (are all symbols used according to BPMN specification and rules)? Pay close attention to the use of event types and gateways.

Validate the model using the token concept. Note any inconsistencies or issues such as incomplete sequence flows, tokens left unconsumed or unsynchronized, etc.

Do you have any suggestions on how the student can improve the model? Consider the overall layout, the way decision logic is modeled, how flow objects are labeled, or in the addition of artifacts (such as annotations) might improve the model. You may note any additional comments here as well.
BTA1004
Process Model Development
& Demonstration
Overview
This assessment is designed to evaluate your understanding and correct application of the full BPMN notation
(syntax, symbol set, rules), model behaviour (instantiation, token concept) and model validation through the
development and demonstration of your own process model. You will further demonstrate your
understanding by analyzing and providing feedback on models prepared by other students. Full instructions
and requirements are provided in this document. This assessment is to be completed independently (not in
pairs or groups).
This assessment consists of three major components:
• Prepare a DRAFT Process Model – Due Sunday July 31 Monday August 1st Moodle Workshop)
• Provide Feedback – Due Thursday August 4 (Moodle Workshop)
• Present your FINAL Process Model – Due Sunday August 7 (Moodle upload)
Moodle Workshop Feature
The Draft Model and Feedback components of this assessment will be administered through the Moodle
Workshop feature. Here are two videos demonstrating how this feature is used as a “peer feedback”
tool. Please review these videos prior to attempting your submission in the Workshop.

Evaluation Criteria
This assessment will be evaluated using the Grading Rubric – Process Development and Demonstration. Refer
to this rubric to understand how to achieve full marks for this assessment.

Process Model Development
1. Identify a Process to Model
You must identify/generate a process you will model using the BPMN notation. The process you must be
sufficiently complex to satisfy the defined requirements (see “2. Model Requirements”). Consider a personal or
professional process with which you are familiar. Here are a just a few examples:

Sport team registration/onboarding
Performing an annual review/audit
Conducting a work-related performance appraisal
Completing a course/program
Organizing a relocation/move (homes, countries)
A work-related process from your current/previous job (career or part-time)
Organizing and/or hosting an event (family gathering, professional event)
You may also review these case studies from Camunda to help generate your own process idea; these
demonstrate practical application of the BPMN notation – https://camunda.com/case-studies.
In choosing a process to model, you may NOT recreate an existing, documented process model from ANY
source or use examples we have reviewed/discussed in class.
2. Design according to Model Requirements
The following are MINMUM requirements for your process model. You may exceed these requirements to
ensure your model is syntactically (symbols) and semantically (behaviour) accurate.
Begin by creating a quick sketch of your model (by hand or using Draw.io) and add the initial flow of tasks and
decision points. Then review these requirements thoroughly and add additional detail to your model as
needed.
Include at least TWO (2) Pools:
• One expanded Pool with at least 2 participants (lanes)
• One expanded OR collapsed Pool with one participant
• At least four (4) message flows between pools
Include at least TWENTY-FIVE (25) Flow Objects in the overall process, including:
• Tasks – at least 10 (undefined or using task types)
• Events with types – at least 8 (none events may be used but not counted for this requirement, may be
stand-alone or attached intermediate)
• Gateways – at least 4 common (XOR, AND), and one (1) either OR or Event-based gateway

Include at least ONE (1) Embedded, Expanded Subprocess
• Use a none start and a none end event
• At least four (4) total objects in the subprocess (included in 25 required objects)
Include at least FOUR (4) Artefacts
• Any combination of annotations, groups, data
**Sample Model – Garden Preparation Process**
Here is an example of a model that satisfies all the model requirements:

3. Build your DRAFT Model
Use Draw.io to construction a DRAFT of your process model. Make sure your model satisfies the defined
requirements and uses ONLY symbols from the BPMN 2.0 notation.
Add this information to the top of your Draw.io canvas:
• Model Title (ex. “Garden Preparation Process”)
• Student Name
• Student Number
• Date
Export your DRAFT model as a PDF (make sure it exports as one page).
4. Upload your DRAFT Model to the Workshop (due Monday August 1st)
The Process Development Workshop in Moodle is currently in the Submission phase. You must upload your
PDF to the workshop by Monday August 1st in order to be included in the allocation of models to other
students for providing feedback. The Workshop will switch to the Assessment phase (see #5) on August 2nd; at
that time, you will be presented with two models to review.
Please review the instructional videos in the Overview section of this document prior to attempting your
submission in the Workshop.
NOTE: Late submissions of the DRAFT model will be subject to a manual allocation of two models to review.

5. Provide Feedback on TWO (2) Models (Due Thursday August 4)
When the workshop switches to the Assessment phase on August 2nd, you will be assigned two (2) process
models to review and provide feedback. These are randomly assigned submissions from other students in the
class.
You will review each model and answer the feedback questions provided in the Workshop. The focus of your
review is to provide feedback on the model with respect to sufficient and accurate application of syntax
(symbols, rules), semantics (flow, behaviour), and validation (movement and interactions of token). Your
feedback is meant to help the student identify issues and make improvements to their model before making
their final submission. You are encouraged to maintain a constructive rather than critical tone when providing
feedback.
Your feedback will be anonymously submitted to the model’s creator but will be visible and assessed by the
professor for your grade of this component.
6. Finalize Your Model (Consider the Feedback)
Once you have received feedback on your model, review it thoroughly and revise your model as you deem
necessary. You are not required to implement all changes suggested in the feedback; however, you must
ensure your model meets the defined requirements (see #2).
Export your FINAL Process Model as a PDF and upload it to Moodle (not in the Workshop). This is the model
you will use for the Demonstration component of this assessment (see next section).
Process Model Demonstration
1. Prepare your Process Demonstration
You will present a demonstration of your FINAL model. The recorded demonstration is due Sunday August 7th.
Your demonstration will be a detailed walkthrough of the model’s behaviour using the token concept. You
must clearly identify/state all objects (sequence flows, tasks, events, gateways, subprocesses), connectors,
artifacts (data, data stores, groups, annotations), markers, etc.
When describing the model’s behaviour, pay close attention to gateway rules and whether a single token
follows one path or the token is cloned and follows split paths to be synchronized later. Where there are
document artifacts, state whether they are an output or an input for a particular task.

Before recording your demonstration, familiarize yourself with all the objects in the model. Make sure you
fully review and practice your walkthrough before recording a video for submission.
Recording the Video
You may use any software tool to create your video (make sure it allows for screen sharing so you can walk
through the model using your cursor as the guide). The video file size must not exceed the Moodle upload limit
(1GB). If you choose to use Zoom (instructions below), a 10-minute video would be approximately 20MB.
Zoom Video Instructions:
1. Open Zoom Meetings (login if required) and start a new meeting.
2. Test your audio and video.
3. Start screen share (make sure the model appears in the screen you are sharing).
4. Start recording. State your name at the beginning of the video. Video must be on during screen
share for identity verification.
5. Perform your walkthrough of the model (instructions in the next section).
6. When complete, stop recording then end the meeting.
7. The .mp4 video file will be saved to your computer
2. Submit your Demonstration Video (due Sunday August 7)
Upload your video file to Moodle using the upload item provided in the in the “Graded Assessments” module
under “Process Development and Demonstration”. Moodle will accept file sizes up to 1GB. Include your name
and student number in the file name.
