How does this Workbook work – Curation,
Application and Evaluation
Almost every workbook will have three sections. Curation is the process in
which team members collect research and break down the articles so that
EVERY team member can read the card and understand the basics of
every article. We ARE NOT making you read every resource the team
collects. It is important that when you collect this information that you are
thorough in recording what the article says.
The application portion of the workbook talks about how YOUR TEAM
analyzes and applies the information that you collected. Key to this is that
your team needs to arrive at a consensus in making decisions. This means
that although an individual team member may be tasked with “leading” a
section all team members must contribute. This is often done through
individual team members making comments. The application portion will
have a TASK LIST where the team leader will break down the jobs and
assign them.
Evaluation is when your team leader assesses how well that all the team
members contributed to that week’s workbook. Your team leader will
evaluate you upon attendance at the weekly meeting, timeliness in task
completion and overall quality in your participation. Participation means
two things:
1. Did you satisfactorily complete your task(s)?
2. Did you contribute to the group consensus through comments and
inputs. For example, compare these two comments:
3
The first one really adds nothing to the conversation. The second does add
to creating a consensus among the team members. (There is nothing
wrong with the first one – as long as you have other substantive
comments.)
If you fail to make comments, your grade will be affected.
4
Company Background – Curation
We use RESOURCE RECORDS as a way for team members to find
research and then display the major points you got from the article. This
way EVERY team member can see what was discovered in research and
does not have to read every article.
One team member will examine the company’s annual report (which is
often on their website or SEC database). This is valuable in the sense that
the firm must honestly address the firm’s issues. Create one Resource
Record for the annual report. (And yes, these will be long.)
All other team members will find three online sources (articles, databases,
etc.) specifically on your company respectively. (No duplicates.) There
should be a separate resource record for each source.
Leaders: Copy additional resource records as needed.

Working as a team. Each topic will be assigned to a single team member.
That team member will write the draft. The links refer to the articles that
you collected earlier – you are simply stating where you are getting your
information from. (In most cases you will use multiple links.) Then
everybody on the team needs to read the draft and make comments.
Based on these comments, a final version will then be written. In the
sample below you can see that all the team members commented on the
draft.

MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU ADD COMMENTS. YOUR INDIVIDUAL
SCORE WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF
YOUR COMMENTS.

History (prior to the past five years)
Member Assigned: Charlie Bridge
DRAFT:
– Started in 1999 as the forefront of cloud computing
– Started in San Francisco by PArker Harris, Frank Dominguez, and
Dave Noellenhoff.
– Goal was to eliminate the need for multimillion-dollar costs to
outside companies.
– The company has had a fast growing revenue since the start
– The first start of the task force was 8,000 square feet but only 10
employees.
-2003 is when salesforce turned into a company everyone wanted.
They had an event that allowed customers to network and talk about
how they can expand their product and get more out of it.
-2005 they launched a new program that would allow a place where
people can apply applications then open them up to all salesforce
customers.
-2013 Salesforce went mobile
-2014 – 5.07 Billion dollars in sales
FINAL: Salesforce started in 1999 with only 10 employees and an
idea to eliminate the need for multimillion-dollar costs to outside
companies while also allowing more free range with customers.
Then in 2003 they took off and turned into the major company that
people turned to. They allowed customers to network with each
other to better the company, give input and evaluate the job that
they are performing. This grew salesforce into creating new
opportunities and programs that would make them into what they
are now, as they hit their first billion in 2009, they grew so fast that
entering the 2014 year they would hit $5.07 billion which made them
one of the leading softwares in the industry.

Mission and Vision
Does the company have a written vision statement, mission statement or
value statement? Cut and paste. If they do not have one, just state that.
VISION STATEMENT “We’re committed to a sustainable future for all.”
MISSION STATEMENT “to empower companies to connect with their
customers in a whole new way.”
VALUE STATEMENT “trust, customer success, innovation, equality, integrity,
transparency, alignment, and responsibility.”
The written Mission Statement, etc. are only EVIDENCE of what the
company’s mission truly is. Sometimes these are nothing more than a
marketing slogan. From your research (particularly the 10K and annual
reports) you probably have a much better idea of what their vision and
mission truly are.
Describe the company’s mission. In assessing the mission, please
evaluate the following:
1. Who are their customers?
2. What are their customers’ needs, challenges and problems?
3. How does the firm UNIQUELY address these needs, challenges and
problems?
4. Why does the firm pursue this line of business?

Objectives
An objective is a goal statement that is more focused than the mission and
typically has a time frame. “To become the top supplier of ultraviolet
sterilization systems to hospitals nationwide” is part of the firm’s mission.
“To double market share to 20 hospitals using the system by January 2022”
is an objective.
Describe the company’s current objectives. You will often find these in the
10K and annual report.

Strategies
A strategy is an “action plan” that describes how the objective will be
achieved. For instance, if “To double market share to 20 hospitals using
the system by January 2022” is an objective, then “Create special
incentives for Kaleida Health in Buffalo to test units” is a strategy, since it
tells us how we can achieve the objective.
Describe the company’s current major strategies.

Ratio Analysis
Ratio Analysis is a process by which we use quantitative methods to give
us insights into the company’s liquidity, operational efficiency and
profitability.
READ this article on RATIO ANALYSIS. It is a great study guide for
understanding and applying ratios.
Describe the company’s financial health using the following ratios. Then
describe the overall financial health of the company. (We will come back to
