BY DAVID KESSLER dead,
denial doesnt mean denial of the actual death. Instead, it means the death is just too much for a persons psyche to take in. In this stage, the world can seem meaningless and overwhelming. Life makes no sense. We may wonder how we can go on, if we can go on, why we should go on. These feelings are important: theyre the psyches protective mechanisms. Letting in all the feelings associated with loss at once would be overwhelming emotionally. Still, its important not to get stuck in this stage, which is what happened to Mary. Mary mentioned to her therapist on multiple occasions that she couldnt visit her husbands grave even though it had been 14 months since hed died. She also shared that her friends and family were worried that she wouldnt give away any of his clothes and that his bathroom items were still in place, as if he could walk in at any moment. Her response was that she just couldnt believe he was gone, but her denial was turning into guilt for not visiting his grave.
