Abusive relationships happen a lot more than we think, because it’s not just physical abuse, it can also be verbal and emotional abuse as well. If your family member or friend is in an abusive relationship, each type of abuse has plenty of signs to look out for. For example, noticing the abuser trying to gain power or control over the victim. This can include not allowing the victim to be around friends or family, giving constant attention, wondering where they are at all times or wanting to be with them at all times, domination, jealousy and possessiveness. Or patterned behavior that can escalate over time. This usually involves the cycle of abuse where you have the honeymoon stage, tension builds up, the explosion and then back to the honeymoon stage. You would notice signs of minimization/blame, sexual abuse, physical abuse, threats, humiliation, and intimidation. If I were to notice my friend or family showing signs of abuse in their relationship I would try and have a private, friendly, positive conversation with them without making it feel preachy. I would point out the unhealthy behaviors and show support, offering them a safe place to escape and someone they can talk to at any time. I would offer solutions, giving them resources like the National Domestic Violence Hotline or other online hotlines in their area and offer any advice they might need. Escaping the abusive relationship is the ultimate goal, but before doing that I would tell them to assess the abusers danger level, have an escape plan, create a safety network, find a safe place to hide, and getting a restraining order. Getting out of an abusive relationship could be hard and sometimes all they need is support and advice to do it.
