March 21, 2010, was not  EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE (EBP’s) date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP.
Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative).
Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.
Assignment: Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.

Reflecting on Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice has, over time, evolved to establish itself as critical to highquality care in almost any setting. It has been proven to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and safety, reduce costs, improve efficiency, and increase clinicians’ work lives (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). What is evidence-based practice exactly? According to Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2023), it is a combination of applying
the clinician’s expertise with up-to-date evidence and the patient’s individual needs and desires to establish a plan of care that offers the best outcomes.
Organization Website Evaluation
The discussion aims to choose a website for evaluation. I chose the City of Hope website
to evaluate if they could be viewed as practicing in an evidence-based manner. Allison et al. (2019) describe eight criteria used to assess a website: usability, content, web design criteria, functionality, appearance, interactivity, satisfaction, and loyalty, which are defined as first impressions.
City of Hope’s website was very functional, with all tabs and drop-downs easy to use; the
appearance was visually pleasing, and they used a calming blue color to provide
comfort. At first glance, it appears to have all the information a new or existing patient
could seek. One video did not function, but all other links and tabs explored function,
leading to high-quality content. There was an abundance of interactivity available: search
bar, chat window, schedule an appointment tab, and call now option. I was pleased to use the site and would pursue this organization as a patient or potential employer.
Perception
My perception of its basis in evidence-based practice was that the language used to
describe their goals was very much in line with evidence-based practice. For example,
descriptive words include world-renowned research hospitals, commitment to highquality care, and expert and personalized cancer care (City of Hope, 2024). In Our Story tab, there was information about their long history of being a leading-edge research organization titled Comprehensive Cancer Clinic by the National Institute of Cancer, and they founded the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and partnered with Cancer Treatment Centers of America. They also participated in the research that brought about new cancer drugs such as Herceptin®, Rituxan®, Erbitux® and Avastin®.
The Join Our Team tab was the next place I visited to evaluate evidence-based practice
for the fourth element of the Quadruple Aim: supporting clinicians in improving their
work-life quality (Boller, 2017). The Quadruple Aim has demonstrated that work-life is critical to supporting a good patient experience and EBP. There is a strong relationship between the Quadruple Aim and Evidence-based practice; they support and augment one another. They described being able to offer high-quality care and work within a collaborative team to achieve improved patient outcomes. They also had a link to view our benefits site, where they have a tab titled work-life balance. Here, they described the commitment to offering paid time off, health insurance options, family support, and tuition reimbursement for continuing education. Supporting continuing education is critical to supporting evidence-based practice with the most up-to-date education, but it also improves work life for clinicians. A video on the Join Our Team tab was not functioning; I
was disappointed I missed seeing it since it looked like it showed the work culture and
community, which are invaluable to a pleasing workplace.
As a City of Hope patient, I have never taken the time to evaluate whether they were an
evidence-based practice organization before, despite visiting their facilities for several
years. This exploration has strengthened my perception of the quality of care I have
received and will receive from them, and knowing that their practice is up to date is
reassuring.
Conclusion
Evidence-based practice will continue to be part of the healthcare industry, and
embracing and understanding it is critical to getting the most from it. The City of Hope
organization website was easy to use. It contained abundant evidence of essential
elements of evidence-based practice, including staying current, participating in research,
and being part of high-standard organizations like the National Institute of Cancer. They have also embraced the latest aspect of the Quadruple Aim, the work-life balance of their staff and clinicians, which focuses on improving their quality of life both within the workplace and outside and supports evidence-based practice. I will continue visiting the
City of Hope, knowing I receive high-quality care.

Where in the World is Evidence-based Practice
In the contemporary healthcare industry, evidence-based practice (EBP) plays a
significant part, particularly in decision-making aimed at health promotion and patient care delivery. This concept is crucial in nursing practice since it requires healthcare practitioners and providers to offer the most effective care that is available, equitable,and affordable to enhance patient outcomes. Thus, implementing EBP in nursing is crucial as it enhances patient outcomes and healthcare quality. This discussion aims to explore various healthcare organizations and analyze and describe how much the institution
utilizes evidence-based practice.
Description of the Organization Website
The healthcare institution selected for this discussion is the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a U.S.-based federal institution responsible for conducting public health research and research on mental illnesses (National Institutes of Health, n.d.). The NIH has achieved several milestones, particularly in diagnosing, preventing, and treating human illnesses, including advancing a bionic pancreas to manage type 1 diabetes and developing Ebola vaccines.
Evidence-based Practice
The National Institutes of Health foundation is primarily built in EBP, as found on its
website. Similarly, evidence-based practice is evident in the agency’s goals and mission
statement, which strives to look for the elementary knowledge regarding the nature and behavior of life systems and the utilization of this understanding to enhance health, decrease disabilities, and illnesses and disorders, and to promote longevity (National
Institutes of Health, n.d.). Studies reveal that EBP processes involve six stages, and thus,
based on this statement, in the second step, searching for and gathering the most relevant evidence comes into play. To further demonstrate the utilization of evidence-based practice, a renowned healthcare provider in New York, the Feinstein Institute for Medical
Research, received a grant from the National Institute of Health of about USD 850,000 to
support its endeavors in developing tools for physicians and APRNs to make and
implement evidence-based clinical practice (Aklin et al., 2020). That was guided by the
fact that over a third of hospital-related mortalities are caused by a lack of evidencebased practices.
Grounding of EBP in the Website
The work of the chosen organization is grounded in evidence-based practice because each phase in the EBP process is seen throughout the NIH. The agency begins with a question based on a clinical situation, and then it obtains finances to gather and search for the most relevant, best, and compelling evidence (Schmidt & Brown, 2024). Afterward, the findings of the several studies are examined for reliability and validity. The institution then incorporates the evidence, analyzes and assesses the results, and disseminates the data.
In addition, on the agency’s website, there is a page indicating its efforts and commitment
to its sixteen research projects and initiatives, and each utilizes EBP processes to advance its research.
How the Information has Changed my Perception of the Healthcare Organization
My perception of the NIH considerably changed after reading and gaining insights about this website. Initially, I had a clue regarding the objectives and roles of this organization, but I had little knowledge of its use of EBP. The essential information I have acquired about this institution pertains to the amount of funding and the NIH’s emphasis on using evidence-based practice to aid medical practitioners and providers in implementing such processes in their healthcare systems (Abuejheisheh et al., 2020). Research indicates that most healthcare professionals and workers find it challenging and are unwilling to maintain compliance in their clinical settings to ensure they fulfil the national accreditation standards and guidelines. Therefore, I was impressed that the National Institute of Health offers research for evidence-based practice and inspires and supports
figuring out how to implement new research and evidence in the healthcare sector by
medical practitioners and APRNs.
