Alongside management, boards can help define the planning, contribute to the overall environment, prioritize and plan focus areas, and develop strategic goals (Odell & Combes, 2009). It is the boards responsibility to review all new initiatives that the facility is planning, to determine whether they align with the mission, vision and values of the organization. Once they have determined whether or not they align with the mission, vision and values of the facility, they need to determine whether the initiative is cost effective or increases patient quality and satisfaction. Quality patient care is the number one priority for any healthcare facility, however you dont want to be implementing too many initiatives that focus only on quality of care that dont have any financial increase. The board and management need to be working on a few different initiatives at one time. Some that increase revenue and some that may only increase quality care. Having information of what these initiatives will do for our facility and what they have done for other facilities, will help board members determine which initiatives to begin with. In some cases, you have to spend money to make money. It may be ambitious for a facility to build a new clinic, however, if the money isnt spent to build the new clinic, then you wont be able to see as many patients. When the demand to see providers increases, but you dont have the availability to see more patients, you have to determine what you can do to fix it. Monitoring how many people call to make an appointment that cant be seen for days, is one way we have been tracking this. We know we have an issue with getting patients into the clinic in a timely fashion. We know we need to revamp the layout of our clinic, however the only economical way to do so, is to build a new clinic. ODell, G.J. and Combes, J.R. (2009).
