Comm 2311 Oral Communication Spring 2018 Assignment 4 Group Research Presentation on Managing Conflict (John Dewey’s Problem-Solving Reflective Thinking Pattern) Group members Date of submission: 23/4/ 2018 ID: Section: 205 Problem: Domestic violence Introduction Attention Getter: What do you know about domestic violence? Do you know the horrible effects of domestic violence? Do you have any idea about the victims and what do they suffer from? Credibility: as a group, we searched accurately for information that will benefit the audience. In addition, we are interested in women’s and children’s rights that is why we are excited to speak about an important subject which is domestic violence. Central Idea: domestic violence is a horrible act that ruins people’s lives. Body STEP I. Identify and Define the Problem According to domestic violence organization (2015), domestic violence is the emotional and physical abuse that caused by one person in a relationship in order to control the other person. Domestic violence is one of the most disturbing problems that people suffer from around the world. It is a demeaning and disgusting act that causes short and long-term complications for direct and indirect victims. For example, if a father is violent towards a mother, that will ultimately trickle down to the children and affect them psychologically. Domestic violence has been a hot topic in recent years not because it has increased, but because victims have started to speak up about what they are suffering from. A more developed society will work to get the abuser to justice and stand up for the victim compared to older times where victims were afraid to talk in fear of retaliation. Moreover, we are interested in the problem of domestic violence because it threatens a lot of people and it is our interest to have a healthy environment where everyone can live peacefully. Specifically, we are concerned about how can we raise awareness against domestic violence? STEP II. Analyze the Problem (the difficulty) For many years, victims of domestic violence in Saudi Arabia have been silent and afraid to speak publicly about the abuse they face behind doors. when the community does not protect the victims, and let them suffer from their abusers, the victims are scared, when you turn to someone that is supposed to help you and protect you but they manage to hurt even more, that means we have a problem. In 2004, Rania al-Baz a Saudi television presenter was severely beaten by her husband and had to be hospitalized. She posted photos of her injuries, enabling public discussion about domestic abuse problems in the Comm 2311 Oral Communication Spring 2018 Assignment 4 Group Research Presentation on Managing Conflict (John Dewey’s Problem-Solving Reflective Thinking Pattern) country (ADHRB.org, 2016). And since then, many women chose to go public hopping that the community would do something to protect them. Her husband has been sentenced to six months in jail and 300 lashes for beating his wife almost to death (Arab News, 2004). Later on, people realized how huge the problem of domestic violence was. In life, we hear stories and watch films that contain domestic violence. For example, a husband who beats up his wife. Unfortunately, people sometimes do not believe what they have seen on television, they think that it is only a film scenario. The main reason for people not to believe is not knowing the causes of domestic violence. There are many causes for domestic violence. To begin with, family history of abuse is a vital cause (‘domestic violence: causes and effects’, 2015). Besides the physical damage there is a mental damage which appears on the victims especially children. For instance, children may have an underdeveloped conscience that cause them to show no regret after behaving badly (Aldohayani, W. Watson, L. Watson, 2013). In addition to having anger problems. Another reason for the domestic violence is having low self-esteem in both sides, the victim and the abuser (‘domestic violence: causes and effects’, 2015). Low self-esteem makes the abuser angry that is why he attacks the victim with no reason. On the other hand, the victim with low self-esteem would show no objection towards the violence. Moreover, believing that people are objects who are exploited to meet one’s need (‘domestic violence: causes and effects’, 2015). Abusers often do not think of others as people who have the same rights as themselves. Therefore, abusers act with no mercy. According to al-Arabiya (2013) around eighty-seven percent of women in Saudi face domestic violence. Furthermore, forty-five percent of children in Saudi Arabia face domestic violence. That is why domestic violence is a huge problem that needs to be solved. Unfortunately, domestic violence has many effects both on children and on adults. First of all, children are affected in a terrible way because when they grow up they might be abusing others in the same way they were abused before. In addition, children might have psychological problems that affect their behaviors. Furthermore, children might have low self-esteem because of the violence they are facing and that makes them think that they deserve punishment (Aldohayani, W. Watson, L. Watson, 2013). What is more, their school performance can change because of the violence they are facing (Aldohayani, W. Watson, L. Watson, 2013). While adults might face problems like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that includes severe anxiety, nightmares and uncontrollable thoughts (‘effects of domestic violence’, n.d.). Additionally, adults might have depression as well as sadness. Not to forget, Adults might think of suicide (‘effects of domestic violence’, n.d.). In addition, adults might question sense of self as well (‘effects of domestic violence’, n.d.). All of the Comm 2311 Oral Communication Spring 2018 Assignment 4 Group Research Presentation on Managing Conflict (John Dewey’s Problem-Solving Reflective Thinking Pattern) people need to be aware of the effects that domestic violence has on both children and adults. STEP III — Generate Creative Solutions There are many solutions that can help in addressing the problem of domestic violence. First of all, people can donate their money and their time to help the victims of domestic violence (‘How to stop domestic violence’, n.d.). Helping victims of domestic violence both financially and emotionally would make them feel better and think positively about life. In addition, building shelters for the victims of domestic violence is vitally important (‘How to stop domestic violence’, n.d.). Because they can stay in the shelters as long as they want without worrying about their safety. Moreover, educating people on domestic violence is necessary for both victims and others (‘How to stop domestic violence’, n.d.). People with no education on domestic violence do not know the dangers of it and how far it can go to. As a result, they do not know how to help the victims or how could they rescue themselves if they were the victims of domestic violence. Furthermore, a person should refer his friend, family member, co-worker and neighbor to a domestic violence organization if he thinks she or he is being abused (‘How to stop domestic violence’, n.d.). Additionally, supporting victims of domestic violence will make you a better person. Therefore, people should help others especially the victims of domestic violence as much as possible. The chart below contains various solutions that will help in reducing the problem of domestic violence. To add, the solutions show different possible ways of helping the victims as well as the abusers. However, there are some solutions that benefit the victims more than the other solutions. From our point of view, the most beneficial solution is educating people on domestic violence, because educating includes many things that will help people in thinking of solutions for the problem. To begin with, after educating people they will gain awareness against domestic violence. Moreover, they will start helping the victims both emotionally and financially. Furthermore, people will demand laws that punish the abusers. What is more, people will know how to react to an abuser. Additionally, they will know how to help a victim. These are the reasons why education on domestic violence is the best solution. The chart below shows the differences between the proposed solutions given above. Comm 2311 Oral Communication Spring 2018 Assignment 4 Group Research Presentation on Managing Conflict (John Dewey’s Problem-Solving Reflective Thinking Pattern) STEP V — Take Action There are many actions that could be done in order to reduce the problem of domestic violence. The first action that we suggest is educating people on domestic violence as much as possible. Specifically, members of domestic violence organizations can deliver speeches at schools, print posters, write articles in newspapers. Secondly, people should volunteer in helping victims recover by supporting them emotionally. Moreover, people should donate money to organizations in order to help victims financially. To add, we should help the victims in finding jobs because that will make them financially independent. Thirdly, victims should break their silence and defend themselves, because living in fear is not the best way to live a healthy life. Conclusion 12345- Summarize main ideas: We defined domestic violence. We talked about the background of domestic violence. We mentioned the causes and effects of domestic violence. We Shared solutions that will help address the problem. We spoke about the actions that are helpful in this problem. Closure: Domestic violence is a huge issue that needs more attention. To add, domestic violence threatens the safety of the community. Therefore, people should find solutions that can help in decreasing the problem of domestic violence. Additionally, all of us should help in raising awareness against domestic violence.
