Does the piece thoroughly satisfy, compelling the reader to think, reflect, or act? Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz Breaking Point Multisource Essay COM 102 General Requirements: This essay revolves around a topic of your own interest and of your own choosing, which will be selected and mined from the play Breaking Point. You will formulate your own argument and support it using facts and theories from Breaking Point (which will be your primary source) and at least two secondary sources. At all times, your voice (point of view and ideas) should guide your research paper and you should never allow quotes or summaries to take over your voice. The research paper should be fully your own; it should not be copied or plagiarized in part or completely from another source. If you copy three or more original words from any source, they should be quoted. In the works cited page, include two new citations from two new sources besides the citation for the play. This is a 1400 minimum word count essay. The word count is without the title, heading, or works cited page. Include the word count by the end of the essay. The Primary Source Jenni Lamb’s Breaking Point Research Project https://www.dropbox.com/s/w9g6wmvuc2qt7yj/ETOPiA.Science%20Under%20a%20Pand emic%3A%20Breaking%20Point.mp4?dl=0 Percentage of Overall Grade (30% of the overall grade): General Steps for the Assignment You will explore Jenni Lamb’s Breaking Point through Moraine Valley’s library video stream. After watching the play, you will create your own topic of interest. If it helps you, generate questions. These questions will help you formulate your own research topic of interest and write a research paper using the play as the primary source and two secondary sources. This essay should contain at least 1400 words without the heading or works cited page. This is the minimum requirement and can certainly go beyond this minimum word count. Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz Due Date: July 9 by 11:59 midnight CST Schedule of Activities and Assignments Week Four July 6: Introduction to the New Assignment and Selecting a Topic July 8: Secondary Source One: Citation, Summary and Reflection July 9: Secondary Source Two: Citation, Summary and Reflection Week Five July 12: Submit a 700 Minimum Word Draft July 15: Submit a 1400 Minimum Word Draft July 16: Peer Review — One Peer Required Second Peer Review — Optional (Recommended but not required) Feedback from Instructor — Optional (Recommended but not required) Week Six July 19: Submit Final Draft Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz Extended Guide The Attention Getter Does the attention getter grab the reader’s attention and set up expectations for the rest of the essay? Is it inspired by the main idea or thesis statement? The attention getter can be a scene from the play. It can be a summary of what is going on in our world now. It can stress one or more of the following: — Conflict — Tension — Humanity of characters or real life people. Get readers to care about the characters and or people through the tough situations they are in. — Scene from real life event or the play. — Highlight tension and conflict to inspire reader interests. The Introduction Does the introduction carefully transition from the attention getter? Does the introduction create the proper context for the rest of the essay? Does it present a focused and interesting summary of the play? Is the summary of the play completely in your own words? Do not search for online summaries. Present your own summary from the very beginning. Doing so immediately indicates to your readers that you have a solid understanding of the play on your own. Does the introduction include the playwright’s name and the title of the play in italics? Is the title of the play in italics? Double check and make sure you have not used quotes. When readers are done reading the introduction, can they explain the main plot and conflict of the play? Is this introduction written for an audience that has not seen the play? Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz The Thesis Statement The thesis statement should present a contestable argument about the meaning of the play. The thesis statement can possibly take the form of one or a combination of the following: Results thesis statement — Because humans do this, this happens — When humans behave this way, this is the result Even though statements: — Something appears to be this way, but the reality is much different. Director’s arguments — The playwright is trying to suggest that . Research Driven arguments — Research suggests that .. and the play supports / does not support this point of view The Structure and Flow of the Essay Connect the main ideas of the paragraph so that they flow from one to the next. Use the thesis statement as guide to help you structure the essay. Make sure readers understand how you are moving from one idea to the next. Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz The Body Paragraphs The body paragraphs begin with a topic sentence, which presents the main idea of the paragraph. The body paragraphs present a very brief summary of a scene or conflict or other important components of a particular scene. The sentences that follow should explain your interpretation of that scene. If you need to interpret the meaning of another closely related scene, you should create a transition and repeat the steps above. Bring the ideas to a close using a conclusion. Keep these in mind when analyzing scenes from the play: You should briefly describe scenes. Please see below for ways you can describe. You are describing to make sure your readers can imagine what is going on in the scene. Please carefully share the detail. You have to judge how much to describe. If you describe too much, then your readers might become overwhelmed with information that might not be necessary to share. If you do not give enough information, your readers will have little to imagine. Please balance the information with the analysis carefully. Please pay attention to this: — Are you describing scenes in a very focused way? — How well do you describe? — Perhaps you can help your readers by understanding when a scene appears in the play. In other words, tell your readers if the scene appears at the beginning of the first episode, or perhaps roughly twenty minutes into the play. You do not need to do this if it is not necessary. This is an option to help your readers especially if you want to talk about certain scenes in relation to others. — You could describe a certain character’s behavior and actions to prove a point. Maybe you want to make an argument and describing the character’s looks, style of clothing and facial expressions may help you prove your argument. — Perhaps you can describe the location. It is very important that this play is taking place through Zoom. — Maybe certain objects have an important role and you can describe how they look. — Maybe you can describe colors if they are important. Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz — Maybe you can give a brief idea of the plot. In other words, maybe you are giving a brief idea of what happened in a certain scene. The descriptions from above should be followed by your analysis. For the analysis portion, I will be paying attention to depth and originality of ideas. I will be paying attention to how well you communicate these. I want to see how you alert readers to the fact that you have begun your analysis. Perhaps you are using analytical words and phrases such as — — — — — — — in other words it is clear symbolizes might may suggests reveals — — — — — — means stages resists evades asks inspires I want to make special note of your ideas, how in depth and original they are. Remember, being inspired by other peoples’ ideas is perfectly fine. Just please use these ideas to generate your own. If you are inspired by others, please give them credit and cite your sources. The Research: Use ideas from research to support analysis and argument. Select credible sources and use them to support your argument. Information from brief sources can be used. These brief sources can be used in addition to the two main, in depth sources you will be using for this research paper. The two sources you use should be substantial. They should be in depth and credible. The research should be carefully integrated into the essay. The flow of ideas should be well maintained. At no time should quotes or summaries overwhelm your voice. Your voice is integral to your research paper. You are the one controlling which quotes to use and which ideas to summarize. You are the one controlling the information and you are telling your reader why certain pieces of information are necessary to help you support your main idea. Proper in text citations should be used in the essay. The in text citations should match what appears in the works cited page. Prepared by Dr. Amani Wazwaz The Conclusion: The conclusion should bring the ideas of the essay to a proper close. Aim to leave on a memorable note by possibly including a prediction, evaluation, or frame that ties the beginning. We will be spending time on this important research project. Please make sure you do the work each week so you can build your essay.
