India intervened with many items that the U.S were exporting by adding tariffs, almonds
being the main item discussed in the article (Maldonado). This was government intervention due
to a recent situation in which they were retaliating against the U.S for a decision they made that
impacted India. China then retaliated against the U.S by also adding tariffs to almonds that the
U.S wanted to export. These tariffs have the potential to impact the almond industry and supply
world-wide. Tariffs in general are just one issue that could potentially lead to hostility between
two countries. Although unlikely, a tariff like the one on almonds could be the beginning of the
next World War.
According to Maldonado, California is responsible for 82% of the world’s almond supply
and these tariffs have the potential to affect many of the jobs of those that work to export the
item. A grocery store owner in New Delhi, Bhupesh Gupta, feels that many people in his area
will not have the purchasing power they once had for almonds and sales will drop because of the
tariffs creating higher sales prices (Maldonado). These two groups of people will be impacted
highly with the increased tariffs as production will slow down as will sales due to supply and
demand.
India’s GDP ranks fourth on table 3.1, however they don’t even make the list of the top
30 on table 3.2 regarding per capita GDP (Sanjyot, 2019). To begin with, India’s purchasing
power is already low, and an increase in almond prices will affect many people there if they can
purchase fewer almonds. A business that sells nuts in India would need to recognize that their
per capita GDP is low to realize that the tariffs are bad for their population. A business owner,
more specifically one on the side that grows almonds, might want to know about the tariffs is
how it will affect their operations. If they are not going to be able to sell their product, they
inevitably will produce less product, therefore needing fewer employees. Their profits might
drop drastically if they are unable to find the new equilibrium on their supply and demand
models.

Hello everyone,
•
According to the article, the US has been locked in a trade war with China in 2018.
The US threatened to raise tariffs amid claims Beijing trying to row back on a trade
deal. The US has accused China of unfair trading practices, including stealing
intellectual property. The US imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese
products, and in turn, Beijing retaliated with $110 billion in duties on American
products (bbc.com). This is an example of how governments economic intervention
can influence the economic flow of nations. The US is attempting to close the trade
deficit between the US and China forcefully and China is not going to be forced.

The impact will not only affect the US and China, but the entire world economy.
According to Palumbo and Nicolaci da Costa, “Chinese products hit by US tariffs have
been wide-ranging, from machinery to motorcycles. The US imposed 10% duties on
$200 billion worth of Chinese products including fish, handbags, clothing, and
footwear” (bbc.com). Because tariffs typically impose a higher cost on supply, the
consumers will feel the most impact. Considering China is the biggest import to the
US, this could have severe repercussions if an agreement is not reached.
Tariffs are a critical aspect of business that all companies should be aware of and kept
close eye(s) on. In the case of the US-China trade war, the escalation of the US-China
trade tension was one factor to have contributed to a significantly weakened global
expansion. Countries that are import trading partners for the US and China will also be
impacted, with supply being a key factor impacted.
