In the remainder of the course ahead, you will select a controversial topic that pertains to technology, digital technology, or social media and write a 1500 – 2000 word (approx. 5 – 7 page) persuasive research paper that argues convincingly for one side of that controversy and against the other.
You can come up with your own topic (related to technology) or adopt one of the following topics as you see fit:
1. Children under 12 should not be allowed to use cell phones/social media
2. Apple’s CSAM photo-scanning plans should not legally be allowed to stand
3. Cryptocurrency should be banned
4. Traditional, face-to-face classes should be eliminated in favor of online learning
5. Physical prisons should be eliminated in favor electronic monitoring
6. Social media platforms must adopt a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and hate speech
7. Social media apps should not be legally allowed to track users across other platforms
8. Self-driving cars should be eliminated immediately
9. All cars must be self-driving by the year 2050
10. People with sensitive jobs should not be allowed to have social media accounts
11. The government should set limits on how much corporations are allowed to automate
12. Video games should be incorporated into all core college courses
13. Violent video games must be banned
14. Facial recognition technology should be banned
You must utilize at least 3 scholarly sources that will help you convey your argument. These sources must be incorporated correctly, used appropriately, and cited thoroughly using MLA standards. At least one source must agree with your perspective, and at least one other source must disagree. This will allow you to present the opposing viewpoint as well as your own.
Your final draft will need to incorporate at least one chart, table, or graph, as well as at least one pictorial component (photo, drawing, etc.). These materials must be cited as well.
This essay must be written from a 3rd person point of view (Links to an external site.). Do not tell a personal story. Do not write in 1st person. This is not a narrative assignment. Argument and persuasion calls for a more academic tone. Do not use me/us as the subject. For example:
Incorrect: I find Gibson’s life very compelling. I believe she is a hero.
Correct: Gibson’s life is very compelling. One can say she is a hero.
