GPSV 341: The United Nations
Research Paper #3
Write a research paper on one of the following topics.
1. The United Nations under its position on climate change claimed that there is a human right to migrate. The declaration of the United Nations is that large groups of people can migrate through and to nations as a universal right. This is a challenge for nations to control their borders and decide their own immigration policy. It has the net effect of causing disruption within nations that are not bound by the United Nations development of rights which are not enforceable, but is a justification by those who want unregulated borders. How does this position by the United Nations impact the sovereignty and security of the nation of Mexico? If nations like Mexico do not agree with the United Nations position does the Mexican government have the right to seal its borders? What would it take for the Mexican government to assure that the stability of its nation, both economically and legally, is assured regardless of international organizational pressures?
2. One of the most effective methods to reduce environmental harms is to enrich the poor throughout the world. We can reduce deforestation through increasing fuel and energy availability as millions of people rely on forests for fuel supply. The two methods that can effectively expand energy and fuel supply the quickest and cheapest are nuclear power (through micro generators) and availability of natural gas. Climate activists have rejected these energy forms even though they are carbon neutral, thus creating the effect of prolonging poverty. Describe what political and financial incentives are used to deny expansion of nuclear power and natural gas distribution. Explain what roles international organizations have in expansion or blockage of energy systems in impoverished areas in the world.
3.In the Kelley text, Understanding a Changing World, there is a description that many nations have moved from being centered on political, religious and ideological beliefs to being centered on physical exchange of merchandise and the expansion of global markets. This indicates that the demands and expectations of a local population will shift from the perspective of citizen to the perspective of international consumer. Explain what you think this implies for national security, national sovereignty and the concept of civic duty.
