ESS 435: Exercise Physiology – Cardiorespiratory Fitness

ESS 435: Exercise Physiology – Cardiorespiratory Fitness

ESS 435: Exercise Physiology
Cardiorespiratory Fitness
Lab Experience
Purpose:

The purpose of this laboratory is to learn how to use a submaximal treadmill test to assess cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) in college aged individuals.

Equipment:

· Treadmill

· Heart rate monitor

· OMNI RPE Scale

· Stopwatch

Submaximal Treadmill Test: ( This is just a review of protocol. DO NOT PERFORM THIS PROTOCOL. Be sure to complete chart and answer questions below the testing protocol.)

1. Place heart rate monitor on subject.

2. Record resting heart rate after three minutes of rest.

3. Orient subject to the OMNI RPE Scale by reading the following statement

· You will perform a graded exercise test with 2 minute stages on a treadmill. You will be asked to give a rating of perceived exertion at the end of each 2 minute stage. Perceived exertion is defined as the intensity of effort, strain, discomfort or fatigue that is felt during exercise. You will rate a number 0 when the exercise feels “extremely easy” and a number 10 when the exercise feels “extremely hard”.

4. Test Protocol

· Have subject straddle the treadmill belt.

· The first workload should be 3 mph, % grade (follow protocol below).

· Record HR and ratings for perceived exertion (RPE) during the last 15 seconds of each minute.

· Increase speed and grade of treadmill every 2 minutes according the protocol below.

· The test ends when the subject reaches 85% of estimated maximum HR or all stages are complete.

Data Recording Sheet: ( Use the sample results below to fill in the blanks and answer the questions. )

Heart Rate Calculations:

1. Plot heart rate results from the end of each stage of the treadmill test as a function of METs on the chart below ( Print this worksheet and make graph by hand if needed ).

2. Determine the subject’s max HR by subtracting subject’s age from 220. Draw a horizontal line across the graph at this calculated max HR value.

3. Draw a “line of best fit” through all the points and extend the line to the horizontal max HR line.

4. Draw a vertical line down from where your best fit line intersects your max HR line all the way down to the x-axis to determine the maximal MET value.

6. Convert METs to VO2 ml/kg/min by multiplying by 3.5

a. __________ METs x 3.5 ml/kg/min = __________ ml/kg/min

7. Based on your answer to #6, classify the subject’s aerobic fitness using Table 15.1 from the Powerpoint.

1. Plot RPE results from the end of each stage of the treadmill test as a function of METs on the chart below ( Print this worksheet and make graph by hand if needed ).

Discussion Questions:

1. What is cardiorespiratory fitness? Why is it important to measure cardiorespiratory fitness?

2. What is maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max)?

3. Summarize the results from the submaximal treadmill test (HR, RPE, VO2max).

4. Make a bar graph to compare the VO2max results estimated from both the HR and RPE methods.

5. Discuss the advantages of submaximal exercise tests.

6. What are the potential problems with using heart rate responses from a submaximal test to estimate maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max)?

7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using RPE responses from a submaximal test to estimate VO2max?

8. Were there any differences in the VO2max results or aerobic fitness classifications between the two different methods (HR vs. RPE)? If so, which method do you feel was most accurate? Why? Please discuss in detail!
