Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
As with any field, a social worker can play numerous roles such as counseling through the rehabilitation process, clinical counseling for behavioral or mental health challenges, advocating for inmates rights, and external services to promote health and safety in a correctional environment (Regis College, n.d.). These workers can face a variety of different challenges such as being able to balance the need of the client with the safety of the larger population. According to Yeshiva University (2020), a social worker faces the challenges of substance abuse, mental illness, solitary confinement, the elderly population, navigating releases, mass incarceration, and lack of funding/budget cuts. A social worker can experience value dilemmas and difficulties with ethical decision-making due to the policies and practices of a correctional system. Take, for example, capital punishment which is also called the death sentence. In some areas, this practice is still legal and a social worker value doing no harm and helping individuals rehabilitate. This form of punishment is going against everything social work values and holds ethical.
Hello class,
A social worker working in corrections locations can be in a variety of roles. In this field, a social worker might: Execute psychotherapy to help inmates advance across the treatment procedure. Offer crucial experimental therapy for individuals with behavior illnesses or encountering emotional health disputes. Advocate for prisoners human rights in session with correctional institute supervisors. Explore contributions service industries that could encourage wellbeing and protection in a correctional situation.
One main obstacle is the social having to work with someone who has a charge that the social worker is sensitive with. For instance, having to work with someone who has committed a certain crime that is near and dear to the social worker. Social workers must always remain professional and that can be a challenge in these types of situations. Another challenge can be budget cuts within the prison. Social workers may not be able to get all the time they need to help the inmates, due to shutdowns, being on lockdown, ect. Most Christians do not believe on capital punishment, social workers have their own preference but also may be against or for it. We can not judge a person for their mistakes we all make them.
