Discussion: Physical and technical security

To converge both physical and technical security it needs to start at the top, Chief Security Officer (CSO). The CSO needs to develop a flight plan to convergence. This should begin with research and surveys from within both sides of the wheelhouse to foster a culture that both sides can coexist in. In this culture, senior leadership need to be educated about their counterparts as well as SOPs of the other department to see how they will be integrated together. This education begins the open lines of communications. A lack of understanding can lead to resentment and hostile feelings for each other. All of this needs to be avoided because it puts the organization at a greater risk for various threats to include business espionage. The CSO needs to establish a chain-of-command to increase the open communications. This also puts one individual at the top to give everyone the same direction to achieve the same goal. Combining the two sides increases the security of access control of sensitive information, data, and materials. If there would be an attack or a possible threat, a quicker reaction would occur to lessen or stop the damage. Depending on the organization, new technology may need to be looked at that could increase the security of networks and facilities while at the same time dealing with the connected risks of physical assets. Better coordination needs to be met with human resources to ensure all information on the servers and network as well as physical information is properly secured and destroyed.

Once trust and understanding that physical security and technical security all operate in a strategy that is head by a single chief, things would begin to tighten up. Physical security leaders will want to support the technical security side because of the improve technology for physical security. The added support for technical security would aid in implementation of newer technology to better protect an organization.
