RE: Discussion – Week 5
COLLAPSE
Current research question:
“What is the parent-child relationship that occurs in juvenile facilitated parricide cases?” The phenomena of interest involve juvenile facilitated parricide and familicide is the phenomena of interest. Diving into the relationship between the victim and the offender can explain the phenomena of parricide and determine if there are any preventional methods. In order to research this, Dr. Hart and I have determined a case study analysis will provide the most ethical delivery of methods.
Dr. Hart and I have also come to the conclusion that looking at 20-25 cases will provide a wide variety of cases that will help determine the parent-child relationships in parricide cases. One thing I want to exclude from the case studies is adult offenders. If there is a team of siblings that killed their parents, so long as one of the offenders is juvenile, then the case may further be permitted. I do want to ensure I choose cases that offer a wide variety of circumstances. I also want to ensure to include cases in which there may be other forms of crime that are involved, such as a mass shooting or a robbery. Though not actively seeking these cases out, these forms of cases will take high priority in being included. One aspect I might exclude from the cases are cases in which there is minimal information that is given. While the crime may be reported, the age of the offender can limit many facts from being released to the public. If there are limited articles or the same facts that are repeated, the case may not make it to the study.
The reason I chose 20-25 cases is that there are not a lot of cases that is released to the media and want to get a good chunk of cases that provide reliable and factual information. Even though there are nearly 250 cases every year (with an astounding 367 in 2017) the research may look under-saturated (Fegadel & Heide, 2018). However, as previously stated, there are not that many cases that are released publically due to the age of the offender. Because of the limited amount of research on parricide in general, there are not numerous theories that are known to correlate to parricide. Heide (2014) is one of the leading experts in parricide (one of the only, from what I can find) and this leads to a problem I currently running into: here is not a lot of groundwork and theories that are laid down for my research. This does lead me to have a unique career in this field but does provide some challenges.
The offenders in these cases are already known to the public. They had added their face plastered on the news and lost their privacy when they turned eighteen or were charged as an adult. The participants do not necessarily have the privacy that can be assured.
